The difference between qualitative and quantitative purpose statements will be explored. Examples of purpose statements will be presented, after which students will be required to develop—with the assistance of the dissertation chair—a purpose statement specific to their research. In addition, qualitative and quantitative research questions will be discussed and further developed in sequence with the presentation of the purpose statement. At the completion of the session, attendees will understand how to enter data directly into the Data Editor Window; define variable attributes and labels; summarize individual variables; edit and save SPSS output; and run, read, and interpret basic statistical analyses, including measures of central tendency and measures of variability. This session also will focus on (a) conducting basic parametric and nonparametric tests; interpreting output; and deciding on the appropriate test to use when conducting analysis; and (b) teaching participants how to conduct, interpret, and report SPSS results. The systematic review of the literature is a well-known method of inquiry in the area of health care and it is also becoming popular in educational research. This method of inquiry relies on the analysis of the published literature to address a problem statement and to find answers for the research questions.
