NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY 2025 Fact Book NSU Florida
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a private, not-for-profit, accredited, coeducational university. It is Carnegie-classified as both a high research activity and community engaged university. It was founded in 1964 as Nova University of Advanced Technology. In 1974, the board of trustees changed the university’s name to Nova University. In 1994, Nova University merged with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences to form Nova Southeastern University. Using 2023 fall term enrollment as a measure (the latest data available in IPEDS), Nova Southeastern University is the largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in Florida, and the third largest in the U.S., with a Carnegie Classification as a High Research Institution. Additionally, in fall 2023, NSU was the 16th largest four-year, not-for-profit, private institution classified by Carnegie as either High or Very High Research Activity in the United States. In FY2023 alone, NSU invested more than $50 million in research and awarded 422 research doctorates. With over 250 active research projects and $127 million in externally funded grants, NSU continues to attract brilliant minds to pursue research that drives innovation. In 2025, NSU was recognized by the Carnegie Classification system as one of only 21 universities nationwide to hold all three of the following designations: Very High Research Activity (R1), Community Engaged Institution, and Opportunity College & University (OCU). Its R1 classification places NSU among the top tier of U.S. research universities, a milestone that reflects our continued growth and commitment to research that leads to real-world impact.. As an R1 institution, NSU is shining a new light on scientific discovery, medical breakthroughs, and technologies that advance quality of life: from pioneering treatments in neuro-immunology and cancer, to safeguarding coral reefs and strengthening cybersecurity. The university awards bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, doctoral, and first-professional degrees in a wide range of fields, including the humanities, biological and environmental sciences, business, counseling, computer and information sciences, conflict resolution, education, couple and family therapy, medicine, dentistry, various health professions, law, marine sciences, performing and visual arts, psychology, and other social sciences. Nova Southeastern University has the only college of optometry in Florida, and one of only two colleges of pharmacy in South Florida. The university’s programs are administered through colleges that offer courses at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus, as well as at locations throughout Florida; in Denver, Colorado; in Puerto Rico; the Dominican Republic and online. In fall 2024, 58 percent of the student body participated in face-to-face courses at the Fort Lauderdale/ Davie Campus, 14 percent participated in face-to-face courses at one of our regional campuses, and 26 percent participated in exclusively online courses. With an annual operating budget in excess of $700 million, Nova Southeastern University has a significant economic impact, with a primary presence in the state of Florida. Through its undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs, NSU educated more than 10,500 Florida students in fall 2024. Nova Southeastern University also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Questions about the accreditation of Nova Southeastern University may be directed in writing to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30033-4097, by calling (404) 679-4500, or by using information available on SACSCOC’s website (www.sacscoc.org). NSU received notification from SACSCOC that our Fifth-Year Interim Report has been successfully accepted with no additional reporting requested. We appreciate this recognition of NSU as a preeminent university of quality and distinction. www.nova.edu/about/university-accreditation Proving that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, a group of local businessmen who called themselves “The Oatmeal Club” decided in the early 1960s to develop an innovative educational concept—an MIT of the South—with a twist. Their institution would break new ground in educational excellence and community service. Nova Southeastern University was founded in 1964 as Nova University of Advanced Technology, a graduate research institution rooted in the physical and social sciences. Initially located in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the university later moved to the former site of Forman Field—a World War II auxiliary airfield that had been returned to the community to be used for educational purposes—in Davie. Over time we’ve added programs in law, education, business, psychology, engineering and computing, and oceanography, and have become nationally recognized for our innovative distance education programs. Today, field-based programs are located on regional campuses throughout Florida, across the country, and at selected international sites. www.nova.edu/about/history.html

Students apply to both undergraduate and graduate or first-professional programs at the same time. Students admitted to the Dual Admission Program are assured of their place in an NSU graduate or first-professional school at the time they enter NSU, as long as they meet program criteria. In addition, some majors have the advantage of being combined programs. This allows students to complete both the undergraduate degree and the first-professional degree in a reduced period of time. The combined degree curriculum usually decreases the number of years of study in the undergraduate college needed to enter the graduate or first-professional school. NSU also offers selected joint degree programs at the graduate and first-professional levels. These programs allow students to earn multiple degrees concurrently in an interdisciplinary setting. For example, many of our first-professional programs offer the option of earning an M.B.A. at the same time. Academic Centers Degree Programs
Student enrollment has grown rapidly since the first class enrolled in 1967. The university grew from a small graduate institution serving 17 Ph.D. students studying oceanography, physical science, and science education to a major university with nearly 21,000 students pursuing undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in a wide variety of fields.
