College of Dental Medicine (CDM)—Predoctoral Program 2025–2026 123 process. This meeting with the SPC will provide students with the opportunity to advise the SPC of any circumstances they feel are relevant to their academic deficiencies and/or behavioral issue(s) that should be considered by the committee in making its recommendation to the dean. The student shall receive at least three business days’ (excluding official school holidays and weekends) written notice of the time, place, and subject of the meeting. The student may waive the three business days requirement. If a student has been properly notified to appear at the SPC and fails to appear, it can be considered that the student has forfeited the right to appear at the meeting, and the committee members will consider the information that is available to them when rendering a decision. The following protocol will be followed when the SPC meets with predoctoral students to discuss their academic deficiencies and/or behavioral issue(s): a. The SPC will review with the student the reason(s) for the meeting, may attempt to gain from the student a more in-depth understanding of the basis for the student’s academic difficulties and/or behavioral issue(s), and may determine and recommend an appropriate action to the dean (see the section on Academic, Behavioral, and Disciplinary Actions in the College of Dental Medicine Predoctoral Program Student Handbook). b. Students meeting with the SPC will be required to disclose any relevant information that could impact the SPC’s recommendation to the dean. c. S PC meetings are limited to the student, the CDM assistant dean of Admissions, Student Affairs and Services, and the SPC. The student may not have an adviser, legal representation, or any other form of representation during the personal appearance, and students are not permitted to use any recording devices during the meeting. d. The student will be given ample opportunity to present statements to the SPC and to respond to questions from the SPC, and will have the opportunity to take notes during the meeting. Materials the student wishes the SPC to consider may be submitted to the SPC in advance of the meeting. e. Students are only permitted to present witnesses in matters involving behavioral and/or conduct issues. Students must provide the SPC chair with a list of any witnesses they may have, in writing, no later than one business day before the meeting date. The student is responsible for ensuring the presence of witnesses at the meeting. Witnesses will be called in individually to be questioned by the SPC and provide any statements. Witnesses may be asked to remain outside of the meeting room for later recall. The student will not be present during the questioning of any witnesses. T he SPC will have the option of calling any witnesses. The chair will dismiss the student and any witnesses and close the meeting for discussion. f. The dean will review the SPC’s recommendation. The dean shall have the authority to refer the matter back to the SPC, depart from the recommendation of the SPC, or accept the recommendation of the SPC. The student shall then be notified of the dean’s decision in writing, either via email to the student’s NSU email address, certified mail to the student’s address on file with the university, or via hand delivery with receipt. The decision of the dean is final, except in cases of repeat of didactic, laboratory, and clinical courses; extension of program length; or suspension or dismissal from the college relating to both academic and behavioral issues. In such cases, the student may appeal to the NSU CDM Appeals Board (see the section on Appeals Board in the student handbook).
