During the initial assessment, practicum students may conduct clinical interviews and incorporate brief assessment measures as needed to arrive at diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations. In some cases, such as with pre and/or post transplant patients, brief neurocognitive testing may be required to assist organ transplantation teams to decide on candidacy for the surgical procedure. Except for certain cases (e.g. involving the assessment of capacity) practicum students may follow their patients throughout the course of hospitalization. Practicum students learn to collaborate with medical teams and write consultation reports and progress notes that are geared to assist them in the management of their patients.
