Summer 2013 Research/Scholarly Activity - Faculty and Student Achievements 22 David Thomas, M.D., J.D. , professor and chair of the Department of Surgery and the Division of Correctional Medi- cine, presented a lecture on “Us- ing a Disease Entity to Change the Culture of an Entrenched Bureaucracy” at the Southern Region of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care event for physicians held March 6 in St. Petersburg, Florida. 23 Jacqueline Thomas, D.O. , assistant professor of derma- tology, was recently invited to serve as a peer reviewer for the Journal of the American Osteo- pathic Association . In April, she was also selected to serve as a peer reviewer for Clinical Interventions in Aging , Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Der- matology , and the International Medical Case Reports Journal . 24 Kallidaikurichi Ven- katachalam, Ph.D. , professor of biochemistry, received the 2013- 14 NSU-COM Kenyon Cancer Research Grant for a study entitled “Cancer Therapeutics: Targeting Cancer Metabolism Through Gene Therapy.” NSU-COM has offered this grant program since 2001 as a result of an endowment created by the late Franklin Kenyon and Frances Kenyon Agneski, which provides support to faculty members who engage in cancer-related research. Dr. Venkatachalam’s research will be supported by a $15,000 grant for the period July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. Drs. Leonard Levy and Kallidaikurichi Venkatachalam. On May 15, a number of NSU-COM faculty members, in collaboration with other NSU faculty researchers, were awarded cash endowments in the university’s 14 th Annual President’s Faculty Research and Development Grant (PFRDG) and 11 th Annual Quality of Life Awards ceremony. George Hanbury II, Ph.D., NSU president and chief executive officer, and Gary Margules, Sc.D., vice president for the Office of Research and Tech- nology Transfer, recognized 37 research projects that received PFRDG awards of up to $10,000 each for fiscal year 2014.
