30 | DR. KIRAN C. PATEL COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE A s we all shelter inside amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, I understand that it is easy to become stressed or worried. However, it is important to maintain perspective. As most of us work, study, and exercise from the comfort of our own homes, health care professionals are on the front lines, battling against this viral enemy. It cannot be overstated how valuable and awe-inspiring the health care community has been, which is why we should all be forever grateful. Whether through raising funds, abiding by social-distancing guidelines, providing moral support, or simply staying at home, we all must continue to do our part in helping these heroes. With this perspective in mind, I also understand that it might not be so simple for others to cope with change. The best advice I could give to someone would be to continue communicating with loved ones, exercise daily, and make a concerted effort to look for the silver linings of this pandemic. I make sure to talk to my parents and my brother every day. I even get to see my dog Pac. See- ing the smiling faces of my loved ones keeps my spirits up and reminds me how much I have to be grateful for in life. In addition, I try to exercise every day if possible. I have been biking, practicing yoga, and running. Practicing yoga has been particularly helpful, because I am able to implement mindfulness and breathing techniques while simultaneously reaping physical benefits. When I become a practicing physician, I will have an especially grateful perspective of life because of this experience. With the right attitude, positivity can be found amidst the chaos. Whether it be exercising outside more often, spending time with family, reading books, or watch- ing a sunset, little moments can be appreciated more completely when we slow down for a bit. Gratitude and optimism are vital aspects to one’s well-being. That’s why I advise everyone to take a bit of time out of each day to reflect on the relationships we are thankful for, as well as the moments we look forward to. At the end of the day, we are all in this together. We will learn lessons from this global pandemic and emerge on the other side stronger than ever. Ethan Goldman is a first-year KPCOM student.
