34 Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine 35 Karthik Krishnamurthy, D.O., FAOCD (’05) , was appointed program director for a newly approved dermatol- ogy residency program at Park Avenue Dermatology in Jacksonville, Florida. The program accepted its inaugural resident on July 1, 2015. Alumni in the News Fernando Petry, D.O., M.B.A. (’96) , was promoted to the position of interim chief medical officer at Martin Health System, which is a three-hospital system covering the Florida counties of Martin and St. Lucie. Prior to joining the Martin Health System as its assistant vice president and physician adviser for case management, Dr. Petry served as the chief medical officer for Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida. He previously served for four years as the hospitalist medical director at St. Lucie Medical Center and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and spent four years working as a general medical officer in the U.S. Army. Jeffry G. Pirofsky, D.O., FAOPMR (’89) , was named president elect of the American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and achieved Fellow status at the organization’s mid-year meeting in San Antonio. Saima Rafiq, D.O. (’11) , who is board certified in internal medicine and com- pleted her residency training at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, Florida, is currently working as an internal medicine physician at the Broward Health Physician Group office in Coral Springs, Florida. Lawrence J. Shapiro, D.O. (’88) and his son Douglas—a premed student at Lynn University in Boca Raton who is planning to apply to NSU-COM this year—had their coau- thored article, “Low Ababolic Profile in Assessing a Patient’s Overall Hair Loss” published in a recent issue of Hair: Therapy & Transplantation . William H. Stager, D.O., M.S., M.P.H., FAAFP, FAAMA, FAAO, FACOFP (’89) , was elected the 2015–16 president of the NSU-COM Alumni Association and served as the program chairperson during the college’s 18th Annual Reunion and CME Weekend held April 10–12. He also celebrated the 21st Annual Osteopathic Medicine and Health Awareness Day in Tallahassee, Florida, on April 15, where he received procla- mations, tributes, and resolutions from Florida Governor Rick Scott, the Florida House of Representatives, and the Florida Senate president. Elise Zahn, D.O., M.B.A., FACEOP-D (’96) , was named to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay Board of Directors. Alia Abdulla, D.O. (’07) , a fellowship- trained surgical oncologist who is board certified in general surgery, recently accepted a surgical oncology position at the Center for Advanced Surgical Oncology at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, Florida. In addition, she was appointed as an NSU-COM clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery. Anthony C. Grannell, D.O. (’89) , of Lutz, Florida, passed away suddenly on May 15. During his illustrious family practice career, Dr. Grannell founded St. Michael’s Medical Center, which was later renamed Health Point Medical Group of Tampa. After briefly attempt- ing retirement, he returned to medical practice by opening Tampa Healthy Aging. Robert A. Green, D.O. (’92) , who is board certified in family practice, recently accepted a position as the full-time medical director of Weems Medical Centers East and West, which are located in Apalachicola and Carrabelle, Florida. Michael J. Friedman, D.O. (’94) , was selected as a Readers’ Poll Top Doc for the fourth consecutive year in South Jersey Magazine’s Top Docs edition. Marc G. Kaprow, D.O., FACOI (’01) , who is board certified in internal med- icine, hospice, and palliative medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, was recently named as UnitedHealthcare Community and State’s long-term care executive director. Dr. Kaprow, who received a UnitedHealthcare Community Innovator Award in 2014 for establishing a catastrophic admission taskforce in the Florida market, is a member of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association Executive Committee and serves as a delegate to the American Osteopathic Association. Alberik Keshishian, D.O. (’03) , who was born in Tehran, Iran, and resided in Plantation, Florida, passed away on December 4, 2014, at the age of 48. After graduating from NSU-COM in the top five percent of his class, he spent the next decade training in and practicing plastic surgery in New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania before returning to his home in Plantation, where he opened a private practice. Mark Kranis, D.O., FACC (’02) , was appointed associate program director of the St. Vincent Hospital Cardiovascular Fellowship Program in Worcester, Massachusetts. Aung Myint, D.O. (’13) , who is an internal medicine resident at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., coauthored six research abstracts that were presented at the Digestive Disease Week (DDW) symposium held May 17–19 in Washington, D.C. DDW is the world’s largest gathering of physicians and researchers in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, and gastrointestinal surgery. He also published three book chap- ters on the topics choledocholithiasis, chronic diarrhea, and gastric polyp in the 24th edition of The 5-Minute Clinical Consult Standard 2016 .             Activities, Accomplishments, and Awards
