26 Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine 27 Student COMmunications Azad Attains David Levine Endowed Scholarship Award OMS-II Hasan Azad received the David B. Levine, D.O., Endowed Scholarship Award, which is presented to a second-year osteopathic medicine student who demonstrates an interest in family and/or internal medicine, displays leadership for the osteopathic medical profession, and is a member of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association. Bral Garners Robert Klein Scholarship OMS-I Daniel Bral was the recipient of the Robert Klein, D.O., Academical Society Endowment Scholarship, which is accorded annually. To be eligible, nominees must be an NSU-COM student in good standing, be actively involved in the Klein Academical Society, and submit an application and essay. Boudreau Honored with Rush Endowed Charter Scholarship OMS-II Lauren Boudreau received the Beth and Joel L. Rush, D.O., Endowed Charter Scholarship, which is provided to NSU-COM students who are in good academic standing and are in significant financial need at any juncture in their NSU-COM education. Uppal Acquires Inaugural Friedman Scholarship OMS-II Ravi Uppal was the winner of the inaugural Robert and Eugene Friedman Scholarship, which is presented to the student who best demonstrates active participation and leadership in his or her class. Peer Mentors Garner Recognition Second-year students were honored for their contributions to their individual academical societies as well as their commitment to fellow society members. They are listed in alphabetical order by academical society as follows: Elizabeth Mortazavi (William G. Anderson, D.O.); Lauren Boudreau (Louisa Burns, D.O.); Jacob Boomgaardt (Robert Klein, D.O.); Debra Cheng (Fred Lippman, Ed.D.); Parth Gandhi (Anthony J. Silvagni, D.O.); Saamia Ali Shaikh (Bradley I. Silverman, D.O.); Amy Park (A.T. Still, M.D., D.O.); and Katrina Tulla (James Turner, D.O.). First-year students Samantha Itsuka Kurihara (Morton Terry, D.O.) and Vinayak Shenoy (Ross Zafonte, D.O.) also won recognition. In addition, OMS-II Lucy Kahn received the peer executive award. All winners are nominated by their peers as being supportive and involved society members who exemplify the attitudes regarding NSU-COM participation, community service, and professionalism within their societies. Alegria Garners Morton Morris Public Health Endowed Scholarship OMS-II Angie Alegria received the Morton Morris Public Health Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to NSU-COM students who have already achieved their D.O. degree, showcase high academic achievement, are currently enrolled in the college’s Master of Public Health Program, and demonstrate financial need. Sixteen Students Receive Dr. Kenneth Burnell Research Awards A record 16 students were presented with Dr. Kenneth Burnell Student Research Awards, which are bestowed on NSU-COM students who conduct outstanding research in either clinical medicine or biomedical science.
