6 NSU CAHSS Dialogues Interdepartmental Symposium and WINTER SOCIAL The CAHSS Graduate SGA hosted its Winter 2018 Interdepartmental Symposium and Social on March 17. The events were held jointly in the Club Room of the Don Taft University Center. The title of the symposium was Putting Knowledge into Action: Responding to School Violence. The subject was chosen in the light of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, and the current movement led by high school students in Broward County. There were five presentations on the topic, and discussions followed each one. One student, Darby Munroe, held her presentation and discussion via GoToMeeting. In addition, a few students also joined the symposium by video conference. The symposium topics, in order of presentation, were as follows: • Darby Munroe, Conflict Analysis and Resolution: Putting Knowledge into Action: Responding to School Violence • Porshia Cunningham, Marriage and Family Therapy: Curiosity Changing Community • April Coan and Kimberly Cohane, Conflict Analysis and Resolution: From Columbine to Parkland: A Content Analysis Study of Where South Florida Media Places Mass Shooting Blame • Oksana Bykova Dognon, Conflict Analysis and Resolution: Restorative Justice • Flavia Almonte and Natacha Celcis, Marriage and Family Therapy: When Knowledge is Put into Action: Collaborative Language Systems Theory as a Solution to School Gun Violence A $150 Barnes & Noble gift card, funded by the CAHSS Graduate SGA and Dean Honggang Yang, was awarded for each presentation. The CAHSS Winter Social followed the symposium. Students and faculty members had the opportunity to mix and mingle; dance to music by DJ Genesis; and enjoy a meal of chicken marsala, baked salmon, rice, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and dessert.
