12 NSU CAHSS Dialogues Department of Conflict Resolution Studies DCRS Professor, Students Provide Mediation Workshop for Seminole Tribe of Florida Neil Katz, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies, and students Jennifer Lawer, Nekeisha Bacombe, and April Coan led an all-day workshop at the Seminole Native Learning Center in Hollywood, Florida. The workshop focused on “Managing Employee Conflict through Workplace Mediation.” Katz and his team offered insight with the lecture; in addition, the group participated in discussion and role- play exercises. The talk focused on using mediation techniques to resolve workplace conflict. Specific attention was given to highlighting human needs in conflict. Also, the exercises gave members of the Seminole Native Learning Center an opportunity to apply this insight firsthand in simulations. Schaffer addressed an audience that included NSU faculty and staff members, students, and members of the community. In her presentation, Schaffer, who was born in Israel and raised in Montreal, related a little about the pain her parents endured during the Holocaust. She told a story of her father, who suffered from six gunshot wounds, and how he healed because he was focused on helping others. Growing up, Schaffer said she was fascinated with her father’s stories and how he had pushed past his pain. So, she wrote the book, which spans two continents and four generations, to offer wisdom and insight about healing. From physical to emotional pain, Schaffer told the audience, “We have the power within us to heal.” As she discussed ways to use insight to heal pain and grief, she advised the audience, “You have to let go of attachment and fear.” Pizza Bonds Students and Professors During the winter semester, Jennifer Lawer, the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies SGA representative, along with Elena Bastidas, Ph.D., hosted weekly pizza parties for DCRS students and faculty members. The weekly event featured not just pizza and beverages, but professors who shared their research expertise, teaching, publications, and current projects. A different professor was featured each week. Although they couldn’t partake of the pizza, online students joined the conversations via GoToTraining. The series, sponsored by CAHSS Graduate SGA, was a great success and will be continued next fall. Keep an eye out for the invitations and join us! Irit Schaffer shared snippets from her book Good Blood—A Journey of Healing with an NSU audience on April 4 in the Cotilla Gallery of the Alvin Sherman Library. The event was sponsored by CAHSS Graduate SGA.
