How To Create Groups in Canvas

Instructors can create groups for students to collaborate on group assignments, pages, collaborations, and more. Instructors can also allow students to create their own groups.

To create groups begin by clicking on People in the Course Navigation:

Click the Add Group Set  button:

OPTION 1: Create Multiple Groups

 Canvas Groups 1-3

1. Enter the name of the Group Set.
2. Choose the Self Sign-Up option if you wish students to self-assign to the groups
3. Choose number of groups to create.
4. Choose this option if you wish to assign a student group leader. Either choose first student as group leader or a random student.
5. Click SAVE.

 

OPTION 2: Create Groups Manually

If you choose to create groups manually, you will need to create indivdual groups within that group set.

1. Enter the name of the Group Set.
2. Choose the Self Sign-Up option if you wish students to self-assign to the groups
3. Choose this option if you wish to create groups within the group set manually.
4. Click SAVE.


Follow the steps below to create groups manually within the group set:

  1. Click on Canvas Groups 4

2. Enter Group Name.
3. Enter number of group members.
4. Click Save.

Canvas Deep Dive trainings are intensive sessions about specific topics including quizzes, file management, assignments, grading and more. Each session lasts an hour and 15 minutes. It is recommended that you attend Canvas Basics Training before attending a Deep Dive session.
