# Weighted Grade Calculations in Assignment Groups

Issue Date: 01-04-2019

Canvas can automatically calculate weighted grades with just a few easy clicks.

1. Click on “Assignments” on the left Course Navigation Bar.
2. Then click on the Options icon.
3. Select Assignment Groups Weight. 4. Now, enter the percentages for each Assignment Group. (Points Earned / Total Points Possible) *100 = Total Score (as percentage)

Canvas determines the weighted grades by calculating:

1. The grade (in percentage) of individual Assignment Groups (sum of points scored divided by total possible points);
2. The total grade (sum of Assignment Group grades multiplied by their respective weights).

In the example, for the “Research Assignments” Group above, there are 4 assignments each worth 20 points; together they add up to 80 points. The Assignment group counts 30% towards the total grade. If a student scores 18, 16, 10, and 15 respectively, then

The subtotal grade for “Research Assignments” is: (18 + 16 + 10 + 15)/80*100% = 73.75%
The contribution of “Research Assignments” to the Total grade is: 73.75% * 0.3 = 22.13%

Weighted Grades within an Assignment Group

In the above example, because each assignment has the same maximum points (20 points), each assignment contributes equally within the Assignment Group. If you would prefer an assignment to weigh more, make sure that it has a higher number of total points or create a separate Assignment Group and place that assignment into the separate Assignment Group.
