Respondus LockDown Browser - Part 1

Issue Date: 03-31-2017

Respondus LockDown Browser is a customized browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard to increase test integrity.  It has the following features:

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized.
  • Prevents access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and network monitoring applications.
  • Print, Print Screen and screen capture functions are disabled.
  • Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented.
  • Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled.
  • An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading.
  • Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop.
  • Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers.
  • Available for Windows, Mac, iOS and other operating systems.

To set up Respondus LockDown Browser for a test it is necessary to create and deploy the assessment.

Once the exam is deployed go to the Control Panel, locate the Course Tools section, and click the link for Respondus LockDown Browser.

All Blackboard tests will be displayed. They will be listed as not Required for the LockDown Browser setting.

Click the pull-down menu to the left of the exam name, and select Modify Settings.

Change the option for the assessment to “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this Exam”.  You can set an OPTIONAL password. By default, the system will automatically generate a password. When you are done setting the Lockdown Browser, click the Save button.
