Housing Accommodations Process

Nova Southeastern University has a policy for responding to requests for accommodation in the residence halls, based on medical, psychological or disability needs. The university complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 by providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with a documented disability. Our housing accommodations process goes through the Office of Student Disability Services to ensure the correct accommodations are provided. It is the mission of the Office of Student Disability Services to provide accommodations, support services, and auxiliary aids to qualified students with disabilities to ensure equal and comprehensive access to University programs, services, and campus facilities.

Special Housing Accommodation Requests

A student may request a Housing Accommodation Request based on a documented disability. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate the process for an accommodation request through the Office of Student Disability Services.

In order to request a Housing Accommodation Request through the Office of Student Disability Services, the following guidelines should be followed:

  • Students requesting Housing Accommodations should submit the completed form(s) and supporting medical documentation to the Office of Student Disability Services.
  • Once a student’s Housing Accommodation Request and supporting medical documentation has been received and reviewed, the Office of Student Disability Services will forward the granted accommodation letter to the University Housing Office, if approved.
    • All returning students should submit a request for a housing accommodation before assignments are made, by March 3, 2022
      • Once housing has been assigned to a student, the University Housing Office may not be able to make changes to implement a granted accommodation based on the available assignment options.
      • If the University Housing Office does not have available assignment options that meet the granted accommodation, the following options may be extended: the student can be added to a waiting list for assignment options that will meet the granted accommodation, or the student can be exempt from living on campus.
    • All new incoming students should submit a request for a housing accommodation before assignments are made, by May 1, 2022.
  • Any incomplete Housing Accommodation Requests will not be reviewed.
  • Students requesting a Housing Accommodation Request are responsible for meeting all housing deadlines set forth by the University Housing Office.
  • Submitting a formal request for a housing accommodation with supporting medical documentation to the Office of Student Disability Services does not automatically warrant approval.
  • Students should proceed with the regular housing sign-up process and housing deadlines until notified that a housing accommodation has been granted by the Office of Student Disability Services.
  • All housing accommodation requests are reviewed on a case base case basis by the Office of Student Disability Services.
  • Any Housing Accommodation Requests that are received, by the Office of Student Disability Services, after any of the housing deadlines, set forth by the University Housing Office, will be reviewed as received. However, any granted housing accommodation determinations may not be implemented the same semester or academic year of the request if there are no available assignment options that meet a granted accommodation at the time of the determination.
  • If the University Housing Office does not have available assignment options that meet a granted accommodation, the following options may be extended: the student can be added to a waiting list for assignment options that will meet the granted accommodation, or the student can be exempt from living on campus.
  • All applicable fees are not refundable if housing accommodation requests are not submitted to the Office of Student Disability Services prior to the deadline set forth by the University Housing Office.
  1. If you are a student who has needs-based housing accommodations for the current academic year, you need to make sure you touch base with the Office of Student Disability Services prior to Room Selection to confirm or update your accommodation needs.
  2. Accommodations are determined based on a student's needs and not their preferences.

  3. An attempt is typically made to provide students with accommodations in a way that keeps students with their peers.  Depending on the student's accommodation needs, this cannot always be guaranteed.
