Who Will You Live With Next Year?

One of the most common worries surrounding living on campus is whether or not you’re going to like your roommate. Fortunately for you, at Nova Southeastern University, we let you take the lead in selecting your roommate(s). Deciding who you’ll live with isn’t the easiest choice, and sometimes living with your best friend isn’t the best choice. It isn’t too soon to start planning now.

Once you have identified one or more people as potential roommates, make sure you have reliable means to chat with them throughout the remainder of this process. Discuss the following in advance:

  • Which residence hall do you want to live in? 
  • What are your RMS (Roommate Selection) IDs? 
  • Who has the earliest room selection date and time? 
Only one person needs to initiate the roommate selection process, so make sure you’re all on the same page before the process begins. 

Choosing a Roommate: Step-by-Step

If you know who you’d like to live with, it is important that you and your intended roommate(s) complete your housing application prior to the roommate selection deadline.

Additionally, you’ll need to have the ability to share information with one another, like your RMS ID number and assigned selection days and times.

Note: Only one person in your roommate group will need to complete this process from start to finish.

Ready to Select Your Roommates?

The roommate selection process takes place in the Housing Portal.

You will receive your self-selection day and time after you have successfully submitted your housing contract on or before the posted deadline. (See Important Dates below.)

Log In to the Housing Portal

Go to the Self-Selection Pages in the Housing Portal

You will see multiple options on this page. Click on Select Your Roommates.

Review Roommate Matching Criteria

Before you begin, confirm that all individuals you intend to select as roommates share the same roommate matching criteria as you. You will not be able to request others as roommates who fall under a different category.

Roommate Matching Criteria

You are limited to living with other students who share certain qualifiers. These qualifiers change from year to year based on supply and demand. For the 2022-2023 academic year, age will be the primary determining factor.
 
The housing portal will inform you of whom you are and are not eligible to room with. If you have extenuating circumstances why you feel an exception should be made, please email us at housing@nova.edu.

Create Your Group

Click on the green Create Group button.

Set Up Invites

Click on the green Invite button.

Send Invites

You will need your intended roommate's or roommates' RMS ID number(s) for this step. This number can be found in the email that includes your self-selection day and time. You will need to click Finish to complete the process.

What Happens Next?

All those whose RMS ID numbers were entered in Step 5 above will receive an invitation via email. Once they receive the invitation, they will need to confirm or decline the invite in the Housing Portal. Once all parties have agreed, you will receive a confirmation email.
 
Only one person from your roommate group will need to complete the Room Selection Process. As such, we recommend that you compare your assigned self-selection days and times to discuss who should be responsible for selecting your room, suite, or apartment.

What Happens if I Miss a Deadline?

If you declined to participate in the self-selection process or submitted your housing contract after the posted deadline, you will be manually assigned to the next available room or bed by University Housing.

Once you have been assigned a space, you will receive an email in your nova.edu inbox from University Housing with details.

Don’t know anyone yet or feel like throwing caution to the wind regarding your roommate or suitemate selection? 

We will manually assign students who don’t participate in the room selection process.

Please note that we do not consult the Personal Preference Survey during this process and it is based solely on a first-come, first-served basis.

Living with a Roommate

The key to healthy roommate relations goes far beyond the length of time knowing one another, and many friendships have ended due to roommate drama.

Residency Exemptions

If you fall into one of the below categories, you are exempt from the On-Campus Residency Requirement: (the same exemptions below apply)

  • You will reside with a parent or legal guardian within the tri-county area (Broward, Dade, or Palm Beach).
  • You are married or in a domestic partnership.
  • You are a veteran or active United States military personnel.
  • You are 20 years old or older.

If you fall into one of the categories above and do not intend to live on campus, you should not complete a housing contract.

Off-Campus Housing


If you're a graduate student or an undergraduate student who has fulfilled the on-campus residency requirements listed above, you don’t have to worry about living on campus.
