Dear friends of NSU,
I want to share with you an inspiring story from our undergraduate commencement.
On May 10th, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, was on hand to deliver the keynote address to more than 900 graduates and their guests. Sullenberger, was able to meet one of the passengers he helped save that fateful morning, Alberto Panero, D.O., ’09 an NSU alumnus. Panero had the privilege of introducing the man who saved his life - and this was the first time they've met since the harrowing experience.
Captain Sullenberger became an international hero on Jan. 15, 2009. As captain of U.S. Airways Flight 1549, he and his crew safely guided the plane to an emergency water landing in New York City’s frigid Hudson River. As a result, “Miracle on the Hudson” became a defining moment in history and Sullenberger became an international hero. He has since dedicated his career to improving airline safety and performance. NSU President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., presented Sullenberger with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on behalf of NSU’s Board of Trustees.
As we congratulate our more than 7,000 NSU graduates this year, I hope that this story can remind each of us about the power of connection and gratitude.
Thank you for your support to Nova Southeastern University,
Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.
