Retention Initiatives

  1. Academic Success Coaching

Academic Success Coaches meet one-on-one with undergraduate students to build rapport, educate students about university-wide resources and develop personal plans to facilitate student success. This program is open to all undergraduate students. The Academic Success Coach uses a case management style to assess how the student is progressing and follows up on how the resources had a positive effect on them.

  2. Shark Mentoring

The purpose of the program is to facilitate and foster the relationship between students and faculty. This program is designed to increase academic success and engagement with the university community by providing supportive resources. The program has explicit requirements such as attending Tools for Success workshops, an academic success coaching meeting, meeting with their faculty mentor.

  3. Academically Challenge Outreach

This program is specifically focused on helping any NSU undergraduate student placed on academic probation. The purpose of this program is to provide a case management format that allows students to receive one-on-one attention from their academic success coach. The NSU Coaching model is applied to these students and a wraparound referral system is implemented to ensure these students are receiving all the resources and services needed to be successful and move back into good academic standing.

  4. Success Workshops

Tools for Success is a series of workshops designed to assist students in adapting to university life and ultimately achieving degree completion. The workshop series includes but is not limited to sessions on time management, goal setting, study skills and learning styles, and strategies for having success in online courses.

OUSS also conducts customized presentations to NSU students, student groups and clubs based on their needs. To make an appointment, click here.

  5. Early Alert System

This program is designed to identify students who are not attending class on a regular basis or are experiencing difficulties that might impact their academic performance in a negative manner. In turn, students who are referred receive outreach from the Office of Undergraduate Student Success (OUSS). Move this tab up under Academic Success Coaching.

  6. Success Resource Fair

Wednesday, September 17th for Fall 2014 Fair

The focus of this event is to share information about NSU resources for undergraduate students in order to help them succeed and earn their degree.
