About Healthy Sharks

“Healthy Sharks” is the latest addition to NSU’s Wellness program that encourages the University community to adopt healthier lifestyles by incorporating health and wellness activities into daily routines.  Other successful initiatives include: the Slimming with Sharks weight-loss program; nutritional counseling services; Plus 30 flex-time exercise program for faculty and staff; and Zest for Life for sedentary employees, designed to improve physical and mental well being through weekly participation in designated fitness/wellness and nutritional programs.

If you are ready to quit, NSU’s Healthy Sharks Initiative is ready to help. Tobacco Cessation programs are offered in two formats: group classes and individual counseling sessions.

All programs are available to the public. Fees for individual services are based on a sliding scale; however fees ARE WAIVED for NSU students, employees and their immediate families.

NSU students, employees and their immediate families who participate in the tobacco cessation programs will also receive a FREE 6-week supply of non-prescription Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT): gum, patches, or lozenges, while supplies last. 

Group Classes Available

“Quit Smoking Now”

The NSU AHEC program is proud to offer “Quit Smoking Now”, a state-wide program that offers a tobacco cessation curriculum developed by ex-smokers to help you stop smoking. The Healthy Sharks Initiative offers group classes to all NSU employees, students, and their immediate families FOR FREE!

Classes will meet on campus for 2 hours each week for 6 weeks, and will cover a wide range of topics to help you through the cessation process. Topics include:

  • Effects of Tobacco on Your Health
  • Pharmacological Treatments
  • Barriers to Quitting
  • Reasons to Quit
  • Rewarding Yourself
  • Coping with Withdrawal Symptoms
  • What to Do Instead of Using Tobacco
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Avoiding Triggers
  • Managing Stress
  • Lifestyle Review & Planning Exercises
  • The Recovery Cycle

NSU employees, students and their immediate families will also receive a FREE 6-week supply of non-prescription Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) gums, patches, or lozenges, while supplies last.

Registration fee is $25 however, the fee will be refunded upon completion of the six week program, thus costing you nothing. To register, call 954-262-1588.

Individual Counseling Available

Healthy Lifestyles Smoking Cessation Program

If you prefer one-on-one support, the Healthy Lifestyles Guided Self-Change Program offers free individual counseling for smoking cessation to NSU employees, students, and their immediate families. The program is evidence-based and state-of-the-art.

Individual counseling sessions are conducted by advanced doctoral psychology students who are highly trained in motivational interviewing. Healthy Lifestyles has offered tobacco cessation services for more than 10 years and the program is consistent with the Surgeon General’s 2008 recommendations. The counselors will assist you in evaluating and strengthening your motivation to quit, as well as help you formulate your own program to achieve and maintain tobacco cessation.

Sessions are conducted in the Maltz Building on NSU’s main campus. You may schedule an appointment with a counselor:

Monday-Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Friday: 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.

The program typically involves 5 to 6 sessions but can be extended if needed. All information is confidential.

For a limited time, NSU employees, students, and their immediate families will receive a free 6-week supply of nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges while participating in the program.

NSU Clinic Pharmacy Smoking Cessation Program

Individual counseling is also available through NSU’s Clinic Pharmacy Smoking Cessation Program by a team of doctors of pharmacy (with the participation of pharmacy doctoral students) and is free to NSU employees, students and their immediate families.

The program is designed to provide counseling and coaching tips to help smokers quit smoking. NSU pharmacists are highly trained to counsel individuals on the treatment options best suited to help smokers “kick-the-habit.” 

Sessions are conducted at on NSU’s main campus:

Sessions are usually 30-60 minutes in length and the program typically involves 5 to 6 sessions.  All sessions are maintained confidentially.

The program is available to the community at large, as well as to the NSU community.
