What Can My Adviser Help Me With?

Your adviser will help guide you through every aspect of your academic and professional path. Ask for advice on the following:

  • figuring out the best major for your dream job
  • choosing the right courses for your degree
  • maximizing your degree through double minors and double majors
  • earning Experiential Education and Learning (ExEL) credits
  • interviewing for internships and jobs
  • networking in your future industry

Meeting with Your Edge Adviser

The first order of business with your Edge Adviser will be to devise your four-year academic plan and map out future goals.

Before Seeing Your Adviser

  • Submit official transcripts and test scores to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to get transfer credits.
  • Set up an appointment with your adviser. Note: It is a good idea to meet with your adviser every semester. Schedule your appointment early in the semester.
  • Review Degree Works
  • Prepare a list of questions and concerns you have about your curriculum to bring to your advising session. Visit the course wizard (to learn about your classes.
  • Review the NSU Undergraduate Student Catalog 

At Your Advising Session

  • Think critically and deeply about what you want to achieve at NSU.
  • Work with your Edge Adviser to create an academic plan that outlines classes for the next few semesters.
  • Ask plenty of questions that you prepared ahead of time.
  • Jot down notes from your session, and create an action plan.
  • Establish your target graduation date.

Advising Tips and Resources

  • Register early so you can get the courses you need.
  • Bring a tentative schedule to your course planning advisement meetings.
  • Complete your courses in writing and math first so you can use these skills in other courses and avoid graduation delays.
  • Discuss your career goals and plans with your adviser.
  • Consult at least one of your favorite professors about your career goals and plans.
  • Use a GPA calculator to monitor your success.
  • Reference the Undergraduate Student Catalog to learn the prerequisites for upper-level courses you expect to take eventually, especially practicum courses.
  • Gain practical, hands-on experience in your discipline by participating in related honor societies.
  • Take advantage of opportunities that can add to your academic experience. For example: Publish your work in the HASS Student Journal. Share your research at the Undergraduate Student Symposium. Participate in a Travel Study Program.

Drop-In Advising Hours

Drop-in advising is available via phone or in-person for students who have quick questions or something very time sensitive that they need to discuss with an adviser. Drop-in meetings are usually limited to 15 minutes in length, and no appointment is needed for a drop-in meeting.
