Who can register to vote?
You must be an American citizen. You must be 18 years or older (you may pre-register if you are 17). You must be a resident of Florida. There is no specific time requirement to live in Florida to be considered a permanent resident.
Who cannot register to vote?
Anyone who does not meet the requirements for registration; Anyone declared mentally incompetent that has not had his/her competency restored; Anyone convicted of a felony that has not had his/her civil rights restored.
How do I register to vote?
Registering to vote is a right. It is available to all persons who meet the requirements. In Broward County there are many agencies where you can register or get registration forms. You may also register to vote at any of the following "official voter registration" locations:
- Florida Driver License Office
- County or City Public Library (i.e. Nova Southeastern University library)
- State agency providing public assistance
- State agency that provides services to disabled persons
- Armed Forces Recruiting Office
I am a student. Can I register to vote at my school address?
YES. You have the right to register to vote at your school address, this includes a dorm room. Any student living in a dorm is entitled to the same rights as any other student. To imply otherwise is illegal.
What are the Voter Registration Deadlines (Book Closings)?
New Florida voters must be registered at least 29 days before an election, to vote in that election.
What happens if I do not make an entry in the party affiliation section of the application?
If you leave this section blank you will be registered without party affiliation. The Supervisor will notify you by mail that you have been registered without party affiliation with instructions on how to designate a party affiliation if desired. Florida is a "closed primary state." If you wish to be eligible to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary elections in Florida, you must be registered with that political party at least 29 days in advance of the election.
After completing a voter registration application, when will I receive my voter information card?
Normally, you will receive your card within three weeks after the application is received by the Supervisor of Elections office.
Do I have to register with a political party?
No. However, in some states such as Florida you can't vote in party primary elections if you're not registered with a party.
Do I need to show identification to vote?
If you registered to vote for the first time at your current address and mailed in your voter registration form, you will most likely need to show ID and/or proof of residency at the polls on Election Day.
What if I go to the polls & they tell me I am not registered to vote?
First, make sure you are at the right polling place. If you are at the wrong polling place they would not have your name on file. If you are at the correct location and are not on file you can still cast a ballot. Ask the poll worker for a provisional ballot. After the polls close on Election Day the state will check on the status of your voter registration and if there was a mistake made. The state must notify you as to whether your ballot was counted. If you have a problem voting and think your rights have been denied call (866) OUR-VOTE.
