Leadership Certificate Program
"To know is to comprehend. Do you know, do you comprehend, in this moment, who or what you serve? We must all be serving someone or something. Whom or what are you choosing to serve right now? It takes courage to ask this question of yourself. But without courage, you can’t practice any other value consistently." - Maya Angelou
NSU’s Leadership Development Program is founded on the belief that leadership is a process of engagement with one’s self and others. Students are expected to view leadership as a way of life, a process rather than a position of authority. The Leadership Certificate Program is dynamic developmental curriculum that will guide students along a path consisting of interactive leadership experiences, course experiences and opportunities that will prepare students be successful campus, civic, and professional leaders.
Emerging Leader Certificate
Students in the Emerging Leader Program are individuals that are interested in learning more about themselves and others in order to maximize their leadership potential and effectiveness. Emerging Leaders will be introduced to leadership styles and will have an opportunity to assess their own style. They will learn self management skills such as time management, stress management, and financial management. Emerging Leaders will gain insight into their unique gifts and talents and reflect on life purpose and where they find meaning. Students in the Emerging Leader Program will increase their ability to understand other cultures and succeed in a multicultural community. Ethics and integrity are essential qualities of leadership. Emerging Leaders will gain experience in examining ethical dilemmas and learn how to make ethical decisions. Emerging Leaders will learn the value of serving their community and reflect on the importance of using their gifts to impact others. Finally, Emerging Leaders will be connected to a community of leaders who believe that their life will make a difference.
Academy of Servant Leadership Certificate
Upon completion of the Emerging Leaders Certificate Program, students who wish to take their leadership capacity to the next level will enter the Academy of Servant Leaders. Students at this level will learn the skills necessary to effectively lead an organization. Servant Leaders will understand the importance of fostering common purpose, collaboration and commitment within their organization. Goal setting, developing a mission statement, motivating teams, empowering individuals, and project planning will be practiced and learned. Each Servant Leader will serve on the NSU Diversity Summit planning committee and will be expected to facilitate workshops for their peers within the campus and local communities. They will also serve their community through meaningful volunteer experiences. Servant Leaders will be identified by whether those they serve grow as persons; whether they, while being served, become healthier, freer, wiser, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants.
