Constitution Day

Overview

President George W. Bush signed a bill on December 8, 2004 (public law 108-447) which designates every September 17 as Constitution Day. On September 17, 1787, the Constitution was signed by 39 of the 55 Founding Fathers.

It is important for students to have an understanding of the U.S. Constitution and an appreciation of this valuable document that has been the foundation of the freedoms provided to all Americans.

"The event will take place on September 17th, 2008 in the University Center Atrium from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Law student volunteers will be passing out pocket United States Constitutions along with American flags to spread the celebration of the day. The NSU community will also have the opportunity to learn about the day through facts, quizzes, and informational videos in passing. The NSU community also has the chance to register to vote and learn even more about their right to vote from the student organization Step it Up and their volunteers." Your knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights will bring you an understanding of how our nation was forged, and the people that made our liberty possible. Please take the opportunity to join the nation in learning more about the United States Constitution by visiting the National Archives website.

About the Program

This program gives NSU students the opportunity to celebrate and observe National Constitutional Day by signing a mock version of the United States Constitution. This act memorialized the actual signing which took place on September 17, 1787.

Law student volunteers promote an “I Signed the Constitution” program sponsored by the National Constitution Center. The “I Signed the Constitution” program encourages students to deepen their understanding of the Constitution by affording them the opportunity to sign their names alongside the signatures of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.

Traditionally, this program has produced strong reaction from participants because it allows students to publicly acknowledge their dedication to the ideals of our government. Seize this opportunity to sign your name next to some of our historical American leaders, and take the time to learn more about the Constitution of the United States from the students who learn about it everyday in the classroom.
