About the Profession

Diagnostic ultrasound has proven to be one of the safest and most accurate non-invasive diagnostic tools available. The advancements of ultrasound technology in the 1980s, created a new specialist in ultrasound, the vascular technologists. The vascular technologist uses ultrasound as well as other diagnostic instruments to image and evaluate the conditions of the arteries and veins in the body. These conditions include diseases that may lead to stroke, aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, limb loss, or blood clots and pulmonary embolism.

Vascular disease is generally a condition of older patients and with the aging of America's "baby boomers", the need for qualified vascular technologists is growing. Vascular technologists are among the highest paid sonographers in the profession. In a national survey conducted by the Society of Vascular Ultrasound in 2006, the middle two-thirds of the yearly salary ranges were as follows:

  • $50,000 - $59,000   25%
  • $60,000 - $69,000   27%
  • $70,000 - $79,000   15%

In addition, the bachelor degree program in sonography will provide the student with management and research courses designed to prepare the graduate for leadership positions in clinical laboratories, research centers and educational institutions.

Have You Considered a Career in Vascular Sonography?

Vascular technologists are important members of the vascular team. They work closely with radiologists, cardiologists and surgeons. Some technologists own their own independent laboratories and provide services to physicians and hospitals. Graduates of the Nova Southeastern program will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registry examination. This national registry is required in most institutions and hospitals for employment.
