Recognizing RISE’s experience and expertise, the Children’s Trust selected Project RISE as the main provider of training and technical assistance to all 100 Trust-funded out-of-school (OOS) agencies.

RISE Training Philosophy:
Project RISE makes a distinction between “presentations” intended to produce greater knowledge and awareness, and “trainings” which are designed to produce lasting changes in skills and performance. Often presentations precede training in the sense that awareness and knowledge-building exercises must serve as the building blocks for lasting behavioral changes. Therefore, Project RISE-sponsored workshops follow a standard, four-phase format.

  • In Phase I, engagement of the learner, the presenter explains the topic and as well as the relevance of the presentation to the learner, their job, career-planning, and ultimately the quality of the child-care program as a whole.

  • In Phase II, presenters demonstrate or model the skill or skills to be learned (where relevant).

  • In Phase III, the participants will be invited to practice the skill and receive feedback on the execution of the skill.

  • Phase IV is a generalization and maintenance phase which will provide on-site monitoring and feedback on performance of the skill or skills.

Upcoming RISE Trainings

Trainings are open and free to all Trust-funded OOS agencies.  Trainings take place at convenient locations throughout Miami-Dade County, and can also be requested by provider agencies to be conducted at specific OOS sites.

In this active workshop, participants will learn how to administer and score the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER), also known as the “Beep” test. This modified shuttle run is a valid measure of endurance and overall fitness and is being adopted as the fitness outcome for The Children’s Trust. A select group of Trust-funded agencies are required to administer this fun, research-based assessment during the ’08-’09 school year, but all can attend . Participants will also receive the materials needed to administer the PACER at no cost from Project RISE.

Participants will learn how to identify areas that need improvement as well as how to recognize program strengths.

All Trust-funded OOS agencies are required to evaluate their programs using this research-based rating scale. Additional trainings by Project RISE are being developed to target specific areas of the SACERS.

In this workshop, providers will learn how to use ORF data to not only determine children’s current reading levels and identify those reading below their grade level, but also to select the appropriate teaching strategies to improve overall reading fluency. By using research-supported teaching strategies, oral reading fluency can actually be improved, often with a positive impact on future gains in academic achievement. This workshop is the first step to incorporating a systematic approach to improving reading in OOS programs.
