Developing Your Budget

Developing a budget requires translating the activities in the proposal into the various costs necessary to support those activities. A well thought-out budget can assist in identifying weak areas in the proposal narrative and result in improvement to the technical proposal. Generally, the Office of Grants and Contracts prefers to work with the Project Investigator/Project Director in developing a line-item budget in spreadsheet format for inclusion in the proposal. This is required for internal purposes if the award is made, and most agencies either request or prefer receiving a line-item budget, in addition to their pre-printed budget forms or interactive forms available on the web, which they may also require be completed.
