Abstract/Executive Summary

Most grant RFPs/guidelines will require an abstract or an executive summary, which can range from one paragraph to three pages, depending on the application guidelines. The abstract appears first in the proposal document after the cover page and agency forms; however, it is the last section that is written. The computer capabilities available today allow the writer to do a simple "copy and paste" of information in the finished proposal, which summarizes the key elements of the proposed project, including a brief statement of the goals and objectives, methods, and significance of the proposed project. Reviewers generally read the abstract first to gain an overview of the project. The abstract or executive summary may also be used by the funding agency to assign the proposal to a particular review group.
