Steffen Schmidt received his BA from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida (1964) and his Ph.D. in Public Law and
Government from Columbia University, New York (1973). He was born and raised in Cali, Colombia, graduated high school
from The Bolles Military Academy, and also studied in France and Switzerland.
His title is University Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Iowa State University where he has taught
and conducted research since 1970. He is the Director of International Programs of the ISU College of Liberal Arts and
Science. He is also a member of the Information Assurance Masters Program at Iowa State.
He is an Associate of the Latin American Studies Center, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, an Affiliate of the Nova
University Oceanographic Center, and an Adjunct of the Nova Fischler School of Education where he works on environmental
education.
Prof. Schmidt has written 10 books and over 120 articles. He has lectured extensively in the US and abroad including the
US Department of State where he recently gave a seminar on Information Technology and the New Public Diplomacy. He has
been on CNN (Crossfire, Wolf Blitzer), the BBC, CBC, NBC, CBS, and is a consultant for CNN in Spanish. He has been
quoted frequently in the New York Times, Newsweek, Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, and many other
major media.
He is a pioneer in the development of distance learning and has also written and consulted extensively on this topic. He
has developed numerous distance learning classes on Coastal Policy, Coastal Zone Management, Electronic Democracy, and
Identity Theft He is currently the Technology Review Editor for the Journal of Political Science Education.
He is the lead author of the best-selling textbook American Government and Politics Today, (Wadsworth) now in its 19th
edition. His latest book, co-authored with Michael McCoy is Who is You? The Coming Epidemic of Identity Theft, (The

He is an avid scuba diver and large, offshore sailor and also has show horses. Schmidt spends his time between his horse
farm in rural Iowa, his sailboat in Charleston, SC, and the Oceanographic Center in Dania Beach, Florida.
