Marcy Henning, a graduate student in the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI), Oceanographic Center, won the Edward Whittaker
Research Poster Award for outstanding student presentation in forensic science at the 2nd Annual Ft. Lauderdale Forensic
Sciences Symposium, held February, 2005 at NSU's Health Professions Division. Henning is conducting her Masters thesis work in
Dr. Mahmood Shivji's laboratory at the GHRI, where she is developing genetic markers to identify shark body parts (fins) to
species using a rapid, single-step PCR method.
Her poster, entitled "A Genetic Assay to Rapidly and Accurately Identify Ridgeback Sharks for Fisheries Management, Law Enforcement, and Conservation," was in competition with 19 other student posters from various universities. Henning received a $250.00 award, and her name will be added to the Edward Whittaker Award plaque where it will be displayed in the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, Information, and Technology Center on NSU's main campus. |
