FLORIDA COOS Caucus 1:

Nearly 40 people participated from across Florida. Invitees included representatives from industry, federal agencies (i.e.,
NOAA, USCG, Navy, etc.), state agencies, and academic and research groups. It was decided to engage the State, SECOORA, and
GCOOS more actively. Because so much seems settled with GCOOS at present, and because SECOORA is still in a very formative
stage, effort will be focused on SECOORA in coming months. There was an exchange of information on the Gulf of Mexico Alliance and
the State's new initiatives to develop a coastal ocean program and the Florida Ocean and Coastal Council (FOCC).
The FL COOS
Caucus plans to meet again August 2, with a larger group, just after the SEACOOS and SECOORA Workshops in late July. In the
interim, we will be exploring possible linkage to the Florida Ocean Alliance and other representative entities. It was
recognized that we must go beyond our traditional oceanographic approaches and find ways to link to the observing systems of
the hydrologists, coastal meteorologists, terrestrial and marine ecologists, hence, a broad Florida-scale eco-system oriented
coastal ocean observing system effort is required. There is interest in participating more fully in the next round of
GCOOS and SECOORA deliberations.
