Red Cross Certifications

CPR/AED FOR PROFESSIONAL RESCUERS WITH FIRST AID COURSE

The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (CPRO) course is for any individual who has a duty to act to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. This course is meant to train professional-level rescuers like lifeguards, EMS personnel, police, security personnel, firefighters, and athletic trainers, but also individuals serving in roles that would be called upon to provide support in emergency situations such as aquatic facility, gym/fitness club or community/recreation center staff. Also included in this course is training in basic first aid which includes sudden illnesses, external bleeding, seizures, breathing emergencies, environmental emergencies, strokes, burns, and other illness and injuries. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive an American Red Cross certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid valid for 2 years.

LIFEGUARD COURSES

Lifeguarding

This course is designed to teach individuals ages 15 and older the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services take over. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Administering Emergency Oxygen valid for 2 years.

Lifeguard Review

This course is designed to give individuals who have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification an opportunity to renew their certifications prior to expiration. The review course optimizes a participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluations. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, valid for 2 years.

LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE

The purpose of the Lifeguard Instructor Course is to train individual’s ages 17 and older who have a current American Red Cross lifeguard certification or equivalent certification from another organization to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training courses and other modules.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course trains instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety programs. Such courses include: Parent and Child aquatics, Preschool aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, Adult Swim, Basic Water Rescue, Personal Water Safety, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, Water Safety Today, and various other water safety presentations. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age before course end date and will be given practice-teaching assignments that will give them experience in teaching course materials, presentation, demonstration, organization, class management, and evaluating participant progression.  Books and training materials are included with the registration fee. This course is approximately 32 hours of instruction, upon successful completion of the course and final exam, candidates will receive an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.

FIRST RESPONDERS AQUATIC TRAINING  COURSE (FRAT)

This comprehensive program is exclusive to the NSU Aquatics Institute and is tailored for first responders whom may be called upon to respond to emergencies in or around water.  The training prepares fire rescue and law enforcement candidates of the like to be more proficient swimmers in order to pass many departmental swimming requirements for hire. In addition, the training encompasses American Red Cross certification courses for Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety.  The aquatic skills learned are paramount for rescuers to be able to respond to aquatic emergencies effectively.
