Welcome to NSU Aquatics! Whether you're looking for one-on-one instruction or a fun group setting, we offer a variety of swim lesson programs to help you reach your aquatic goals. This Policies and Procedures page outlines important information about both private and group lessons, including registration, make-up classes, and cancellation policies. Please review this information before enrolling to ensure a smooth and successful swim lesson experience with NSU Aquatics.
You are responsible for being on time to all class sessions. If you ares late, the instructor(s) will not schedule a make-up session. The same goes for classes that are missed entirely. If you do not arrive within 15 minutes after the start time for the lesson, the instructor has the right to leave or start another lesson. Lessons will not be made-up or refunded for tardiness or absence.
The lifeguards have the ultimate decision on what is acceptable and what is not.
Private Lessons
The instructors have the ultimate discretion on which class level is best for a youth and have the right to switch a child into a higher or lower level class.
Swim lessons will be canceled in the event there is an inclement weather warning. Inclement weather is defined as:
It is NSU Aquatics policy that all patrons must clear the pool and deck area for any of these warnings. Swim lessons will resume once 30 minutes has passed from the last sound or sight of thunder and/or lightening or NSU's warning system gives an all clear. Every effort will be made to contact parents/participants if it is suspected that your swim lesson will be canceled for the day.
Your lessons will be held in the Recplex Pool that is located inside the Don Taft University Center. A campus map can be found HERE . We are located at 23C on the map. You will need your NSU SharkCard to get through the turnstiles. If you do not have a NSU SharkCard, you will need to let the front desk staff know that you are here for group lessons. If you need help finding the correct pool, the front desk staff will also be able to assist you. The instructor and/or the coordinator will be waiting for you the first day of your lessons at the front desk.
Physical Address
3300 S. University Drive
Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33328-2004
There are locker rooms directly across the pool deck for your use during lessons. No deck changing is allowed at any of our pools.
Make-up days for private swim lessons will only be scheduled in the event that an entire class is canceled due to inclement weather. The make-up lesson will be scheduled at the discretion of both the instructor and participant and is subject to approval by the coordinator. Private make-up lessons must be completed within the specified semester (fall, winter, summer). Any lessons not completed within that semester will be forfeited and no make-up or refund will be assessed. In addition, instructors are not allowed to teach private swim lessons at home residences due to personal safety and liability concerns, so please do not solicit them to do so.
Parents may not leave the pool deck during the swim lessons. They must be available to take a child to the bathroom if the child needs to go during a lesson as swim instructors and lifeguards cannot leave the other youth in order to take them. Parents, siblings, friends, and anyone else not registered for the swim lesson may not enter the water unless it is during a parent/child aquatics class. Only one parent or caregiver per child during parent/child aquatic classes is allowed.
We ask all parents to help us keep our pools healthy and safe for all users. In order to do this, we ask that all patrons with kids:
No refunds will be assessed for days a learner misses during a session or once a session starts. However, a total refund can be assessed only if a session is canceled in its entirety by NSU Aquatics or a refund is requested prior to 48 hours of the start time of the session. If a refund is requested in less than 48 hours of the scheduled start time, a $35 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund amount. Once a session starts, no refunds will be given.
Private lessons offer participants flexibility in setting their own schedule and determining the number of lessons. Before registering, you must build a schedule. You may also select a preferred instructor. We cannot guarantee an instructor of your choice but every effort will be made to do so. When building a schedule, all lessons must be concluded in the specified time period. No lessons will not be carried over to the next semester. Semesters are fall, winter, and summer. Once your schedule and instructor is approved, the Coordinator will email you the registration link to complete online payment.
Registration and payment must be completed before the first lesson begins. If the registration is not completed in a timely manner, your schedule and instructor may be forfeited. Once a final schedule is set, it must be followed by the participant. Please refer to our make-up lesson and cancellation policies for more information.
If you feel a swim instructor, lifeguard, or other Recreation and Wellness staff does not provide a sufficient level of customer service, please contact the aquatics coordinator at (954) 262-6804. All patrons will be given the opportunity to fill out an evaluation form at the completion of the session.
Group Lessons
If a class is full (8 participants per instructor), then you can be added to a waitlist. If an opening becomes available, you will be immediately notified via email. (Occasionally, if we get enough interest on a waitlist, we will try to schedule another class.)
A spot is non-transferable under any circumstances—a person who has a spot cannot "give" one's spot to you. The person must drop the course by contacting NSU Aquatics and the first person on the waiting list to sign up will gain it.
Private Lessons
If no instructors are available, you can be added to a waiting list. Once an instructor becomes available, you will be immediately notified via email.
