Star Quality Rating System Initiative
Mailman Segal Institute staff initiated community activities
to implement a Star rating system to help consumers identify
the level of quality within child care centers. Similar to
a “triple
A” rating for hotels, the 4-star rating is a system for
evaluating the quality provided by child care centers, including:
- Program Quality, measured by the Environment Rating Scales
- Staff Qualifications (Teachers and Directors)
- Adult-Child Ratios and Group Sizes
- Family and Community Involvement
- Licensing Compliance History
The Quality Rating system was developed in collaboration with
the local School Readiness Coalition, Broward Child Care Licensing
and Enforcement division, the coordinated child care agency
Family Central Inc., and more than 50 providers of child care
services. Participation in 4 Star activities is through the
Broward School Readiness Coalition.
