This concentration is designed for those allied health professionals seeking opportunities in higher education teaching. The study of educational practical theory related to higher education is an important aspect of professional development for the master prepared allied health professional. Beginning in the Fall of 2003, MMS or MHSc distance students will have the option of completing electives or a concentration in Health Science Higher Education. This opportunity will allow the student to begin to explore education as a career choice. For many these core skills are vital in health care today.

Healthcare Education
This course explores the various theories and applications of adult
education in the practice of training, pre-professional education, and
post-professional education of medical personnel. Critical analysis of
the different methods of teaching and training healthcare professionals
is accomplished through discussion, research, investigation, journal
development and assignments.

Educational Theories and Psychology
This course explores the history and evolution of educational theories
and their role in the development of curriculum and instruction related
to healthcare education.

Curriculum and Instruction in Healthcare Education
Using the principles of curriculum development and related research,
students will develop a plan for a unit of instruction for a healthcare
course that includes a need assessment, use of resources, implementation
specification, material development and assessment of instructional effectiveness.

Assessment and Evaluation in Healthcare Education
This course provides an overview of student and program evaluation and
assessment methods in healthcare education. This course will consider
multiple assessment models, used in clinical settings, from traditional
written assessments to alternative assessment methods such as OSCEs,
portfolios and simulated patients. Students will develop an evaluation/assessment
plan tailored to their professional situation.
Concentration for Recognition
In order to gain recognition in the "Higher Education" concentration
of the MMS or MHSc program, the student must complete all four courses
for 12 total hours. Those completing the concentration will be recognized
as such with appropriate credentials. Students may take individual courses
for elective or toward completion of the clinical core for those not
involved with clinical activities.
