What is Sharkey's Reading Club?

It is a fun-filled way to encourage kids to continue to read. We give each participant a reading log and Sharkey's Reading Club membership card to keep track of their monthly reading.

Who can join?

Any child, from pre-schoolers through elementary school age, can join Sharkey's Reading Club. You just need to have an Alvin Sherman Library card. Your Alvin Sherman Library card is your ticket to a world of great programs and stories. If you don't have one yet you can apply at www.nova.edu/library/card or stop by our circulation desk. Parents/legal guardians must be present to sign for minors.

How do I sign up?

The kickoff for Sharkey's Reading Club will begin at our special Sherman Library booth at the Day For Children event at the NSU campus on September 12th,  2010. You can also stop by Public Library Services in the Alvin Sherman Library any day after Sept. 12th, and stop by our Sharkey’s table.  Just bring your library card to the Sharkey's Reading Club table in the Public Library Services department on the first floor. If you don't have one yet you can apply at www.nova.edu/library/card or stop by our Sherman Library circulation desk. Parents/legal guardians must be present to sign for minors. We encourage parents and guardians to obtain a library card for each child.

When does Sharkey's Reading Club begin and end?

Sunday September 12, 2010 through Saturday April 16, 2011. To sign up for Sharkey's Reading Club online click here.

What about kids who can't read yet?

A parent or caregiver can read to their pre-reading child. Listening to a book on tape/cd is another great way to enjoy stories and support reading comprehension and new vocabulary.

How does Sharkey's Reading Club work?

Step 1: Youngsters set a monthly reading goal based on either the number of pages or the amount of time you plan to read either daily or weekly. (Parents may want to consider setting a reading goal as well!)

Step 2: Keep track on the "official" Sharkey's Reading Club reading log.

Step 3: READERS REWARDS: When you have achieved your goal for the month, bring your reading log and Sharkey's Reading Club membership card to the Public Library Services desk. We will punch the Sharkey's Reading Club membership card and you will then earn a visit to the Sharkey's Treasure Chest for your monthly reward. We will also give you a new reading log for the coming month.
