COMP
Online Library Assignment
Welcome to the Online Library
Assignment for your COMP course. This assignment will help you get acquainted
with NSU Library resources and get you started on your research paper.
Your topic
for your research paper will be provided by your instructor. This
assignment
requires
that
you
use
the NSU
Alvin Sherman Library Website (http://www.nova.edu/library/main)
to find FOUR resources that can help you develop your paper.
The four resources should be books or articles located using NSU databases
as described below. Once you've found your resources, complete this form and
submit as directed. Also, write complete citations for each
resource using the formatting style specified by your professor and attach
them
to this assignment after you’ve printed and submitted the form online.
Both this assignment and your research paper have been assigned points and
will be graded.

STEP ONE:
Searching NSU's Databases
To Log in:
- Go to the Alvin Sherman Library Web page at www.nova.edu/library/main
- Click on Electronic Resources
- Click on Databases
- Click on NSU Patrons
- Log in using your last name and university ID# (the number that begins
with the letter “N”).
Numerous categories are available to help you find a relevant database for your research; some that you may find more useful are the following:
- General & Multidisciplinary (under the "Browse by subject" heading)
- E-Books (under the "Browse by type of material" heading)
- News/Current Events (under the "Browse by subject" heading)
Once you select a category, numerous databases will appear under your chosen heading. You may then proceed to search relevant databases according to the topic of your paper.
Full-text articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as the
full text of electronic books are available for immediate retrieval online
in the following databases:
- Academic OneFile
- Credo Reference
- Greenwood eBooks
- InfoTrac OneFile
- LexisNexis Academic
- NetLibrary
- NewsBank NewsFile Collection with Periodicals
- ProQuest Newspapers
- Reader’s Guide Full Text
- Research Library
- Wilson OmniFile Full Text Mega
STEP TWO:
Finding Full Text
Sometimes, while searching in a particular database, the full text of an article
is not available for immediate retrieval. However, just because the full text
of your selected article is not available in one database does not mean it
is not available in another one of NSU’s over 200 databases.
How to Find the Full Text of an Article with Find It!:
Some library databases have our new Find It! feature ,
which helps you link directly from a citation in a database to the full text
for
that citation. If full text is not available online, it provides other options
for obtaining full text. For more information, visit the Find It! Web page
at
http://www.nova.edu/library/help/findit.html.
How to Find the Full Text of an Article with a Citation:
- Have your complete citation information (article title, author, and the
name of the journal/magazine/newspaper (including date and volume/issue
numbers).
- Search across all databases that NSU subscribes to using the Journal Finder, which can be found in the
Electronic Resources section of the Sherman Library Web page.
- In the “Find” box, type in the title of the journal (NOT the
title of the article).
- Scroll down and click on the “Search” button.
- In your list of results, find the title of your journal. Under the bold
title, you will see at least one blue link, which represents the name
of the database that contains the full text of your journal. Before you
click
on the link, check your citation for the year your article was published.
Make sure your article’s date within the date range to
the right of the blue link. Then, click on the blue link, which will
open a new browser window.
- Follow the instructions in the database window for retrieving your article.
Some databases take you to a “home page” for the publication,
with a list of links that represent the different issues (including
dates). In some databases, you will have to type in your article title
and/or author(s)
to retrieve the article.
NOTE: Not all magazines, newspapers, and journals are available
electronically. If you are unable to find your article using the Journal Finder, remember
you can still order the article through the Sherman Library Document Delivery
Department. For more information about Document Delivery, visit their Web
site:
http://www.nova.edu/library/serv/docdel/distance.html

If you find a research article that focuses well on your
topic, check out the references cited by the author at the end of the article.
The referenced
articles (also known as the bibliography) are usually a great resource for
further research and study. Remember, you can use the Journal Finder to see if a particular periodical is available for immediate retrieval
online in one of the library’s databases. |
STEP THREE:
Fill in the online form below:
After you've found four useful resources, complete the online form below providing
details about the resources and how you found them. Be sure to complete the entire
form
to get full credit.
