Subject Guide: Biology & Life Sciences

Databases

The online databases serve as indexes to the literature, primarily periodicals. They include citations, abstracts and, sometimes, full-text depending on the type of database. Other special features that database may have are:

  • thesaurus (list of preferred subject terms used within the database)
  • graphic objects indexing (indexing of graphic items such as photographs, maps, and tables
  • saved searches (the capability of saving created search strategies for reuse in future sessions)
  • e-mail alerts (the capability to e-mail the new results of a saved search on a regular basis or whenever the database is updated)
  • citation styling (capability of using specific bibliographic formats (APA, MLA, etc.) when printing, downloading, or e-mailing search results
  • citation linking (the capability of linking to other articles that have cited a particular article)
  • audio conversion (capability of producing an audio version of full text articles)
  • language conversion (capability of translating full text to different languages)
