Teacher Resources for Incorporating Database Use into the Classroom

Many databases available through the Alvin Sherman Library offer curriculum guides, in-service guides, research guides, special topic summaries or other teaching aids. Created by the database providers, these teaching aides help teachers incorporate database content into curriculum or lesson plans. Many offer tips on teaching students how to conduct research and use the databases. They are intended primarily for K-12 teachers.

American Mosaic

Classroom Resources for The American Mosaic
These Classroom Resources have been designed to provide valuable tools for teaching African American and Latino American History and Culture and to help teachers and students make the most of the American Mosaic suite of products.

Latino American Experience Classroom Resources

A team of secondary teachers is designing this to provide valuable tools for teaching Latino American History and Culture and to help instructors and students make the most of Latino American Experience (LAE).

The preview site contains two lesson plans—one in English and one in Spanish—which feature elements the remaining plans will all contain: document-based questions, students activities, vocabulary, and other valuable teaching tools. Each lesson plan consists of a teacher page and a student page, along with supporting materials such as graphic organizers and assessment rubrics.

African American Experience Classroom Resources

The African American section of the Classroom Resources contains 88 Lesson Plans, written by education and subject experts. Also included are introductory essays—one for students and one for teachers and librarians—by Robert S. Houghton of Western Carolina University to help make the best use of AAE in your classroom.

Each lesson plan contains links to primary source materials, including maps, newspaper articles, slave narratives, advertisements, photos, and songs and audio clips. Lesson plans also employ vocabulary lists, student activities, and other teaching tools.

Biography Resource Center

The Biography Resource Center home page always highlights an individual of current or historical importance. If you click on the name of the Spotlight On... person, you will be taken to the tabbed results page for that individual, allowing easy access to the person's biographies, magazine articles by or about that person, and websites. You can also select the Spotlight On... Archive link from the BioRC main page to view a list of previous Spotlight On... biographees.

Grolier Online Passport provides access to the Encyclopedia Americana and the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia

Feature Stories
NewsNow will contain three to five feature stories each week. These generally cover topics of interest in the news and may have one or more of the following assets: a fun fact, a photo or illustration, and a Teachers' Guide. To access a feature story, from the Passport splash page, click on any of the titles on the left in the NewsNow portion of the splash page. In the Passport interface, see the "Teachers' Guide" box for links to a study guide including introduction to the topic, links to full-text articles and encyclopedia entries, relevant vocabulary and definitions, discussion leads, activities, evaluation, and more, geared to middle and high school to undergraduate level. In the Kids interface, see the "Lesson Plan" link near the top of Feature Stories for similar information geared to elementary school level. The Feature Archive provides access to past feature stories and their related teachers' guides/lesson plans in both interfaces.

The Issues & Controversies On File database provides a concise and thoroughly researched summary of issues and controversies in today's news, including historical background on the issues and a synopsis of all sides of the debate. The Curriculum Tools provide supplementary features that help both students and teachers get the most out of the information available in the database and put it to use. Students can find special guides to researching the major issues and controversies of the day, and to using their findings in assignments. Teachers will find creative classroom activities and homework assignments, as well as helpful guides to teaching with Issues & Controversies.

Newly redesigned, the award-winning Science Online offers a comprehensive, curriculum-oriented overview of a broad range of scientific disciplines through extensive essays, diagrams, illustrations, images, biographies, experiments, activities, and definitions. Invaluable new features include current science news articles, as well as a feature on the cell as shown through flash animations.

An Authoritative and Highly Visual Science Resource

Science Online provides reliable information in a variety of useful formats. The content is organized by subject area and type of resource, as well as by the National Science Education Standards. Users can follow an extensive network of hyperlinks and suggested searches to related topics. They can search by keyword or phrase, or browse by subject area or type of resource. Tabbed search results and Boolean search capabilities help users easily find their desired results. High-quality print, e-mail, reduce and enlarge text, and save capabilities; full database citations; and a help page are also available.

Today's Science

Today's Science ties what is taught in the classroom to the latest developments in the laboratory and the
world. The Curriculum Tools provide a variety of supplementary features tailored to students and teachers,

Facts On File World News Digest is an ideal tool for researching and teaching about the world we live in. This Resource Center provides supplementary features that help both students and teachers get the most out of the information available in the database and put it to use.
