Databases

Online databases serve as indexes to the literature, primarily periodicals. Depending on the type of database, they may include citations, abstracts and, sometimes, full-text. Most online databases provide information on MANY types of articles, however, there may be times when you need only research articles. Below are suggestions for search strategies to help you locate research articles.

Keywords that can be used to search in any database:

clinical trial  empirical method  quantitative research
control group  experiment  research method
controlled trial  experimental research  research study
double blind  hypothesis or hypotheses  scientific experimentation
empirical research  original research

*Note that you may want to also try the plural of these terms.  (e.g., trial or trials)

In the tables below are searching suggestions for locating research articles in specific databases. Click on  Info icon Info icon for a complete description of any database. When you see the Screenshot icon icon, click on it to view a sample screen shot that demonstrates a database search technique. To access the databases discussed below, go to the Electronic Resources section of the library Web site.
