Search Results

Search results will vary. If you get:

  • No records matched your search, then check your spelling or the fields you searched in.
  • Too many, then go back and limit your search. Sometimes a search needs to be modified with: additional search words, searching only a specific field, adding date limitations, or type of materials.
  • Too few, then go back and expand your search. Consider synonyms for your search words or concepts. Try to use professional language or terminology.
  • Irrelevant results, then try new search terms. Consider synonyms or related concepts. Identify and search using descriptors. Try a different database.

Results lists

A list of search results matching your search terms will be displayed. The Article Search Results show

  • citations for items that matched your search
  • links to full text (when available) – indicated by a View Article link and icon (Icon for full text or Icon for full text in PDF format or Icon for link to full text in JSTOR)

To navigate through the results

  • use the Next or Previous links to move through the results
  • use Results Options to Sort results and/or Filter (limit) using various criteria such as journal, language, date, and journal subject.

Search Tips

Use advanced search features to modify a search to obtain more successful search results. You can combine advanced search features to modify and improve your search. Advanced search features often include:

  • phrase or proximity searching
  • field searching
  • date
  • document and/or publication type
  • Boolean operators
  • plurals and truncation

One useful tip when searching any electronic database is to leave out articles, prepositions, and very abstract or general terms–they confuse the database's search engine.

For example, if the paper is on "The Impact of Mainstreaming Students in Math Classes,” use the most precise terms like mainstreaming and mathematics and skip impact, the, of, and in.

Phrase or proximity searching

To search for a phrase

  • put the phrase in double quotes, such as
       "higher education"
       "
    curriculum development"

To search for words that are close to each other, use one of the following proximity operators

  • The NEAR operator looks for the words within a specified distance of each other, and in any order. Use a period and number to specify the maximum number of word between words. The default is ten words between.
genetic near engineering (same as: genetic near.10 engineering)
       atomic energy near.6 nuclear power

  • The FBY operator (followed by) looks for words within a specified distance of each other, and in the specified order. Use a period and number to specify the maximum number of word between words. The default is ten words between.
genetic fby engineering (same as: genetic fby.10 engineering
       atomic energy fby.4 nuclear power

Field searching

To search within a specific field in the record

  • type your search term(s) in the box for the desired field
  • if more than one search box is used, they will be searched as if linked by a Boolean AND

Date

To limit a search to specific years

  • go to the Year of Publication
  • type a specific range of years: From 1990 to 1995
or for a specific year, type the desired year in both boxes: From 1990 to 1990

Publication type

To specify a type of publication

  • go to the Search Options section of the Article Search
  • select the check boxes to specify publication type(s)

Boolean operators

The Boolean operators, AND, OR, and NOT, can be used to modify a search

  • if you enter search terms in more than one search box, by default they are treated as if they were combined using the AND operator
  • you may use any of the following Boolean operators within a search box:

Use AND to narrow a search. AND looks for both terms in the same record.
leadership and vision; mainstreaming and science

Use OR to broaden a search. OR looks for either term in the same record.
mainstreaming or inclusion; elementary education or secondary education

Use NOT to eliminate records with a certain term.
Saturn not car; Venus not planet

Plurals

To search for plurals or truncate search terms

  • Use the asterisk as a wildcard following a singular term or word stem
    leader* retrieves leader, leaders, leadership
econom*  retrieves economic, economics, economist, econometrics, economy, economical, economize
