LexisNexis Academic offers a wide range of resources, including news, business
information, legal materials, medical information, and reference sources.
LexisNexis Academic provides full-text information from over 5,600 sources
including
- newspapers, wire services, broadcast transcripts, international news, and
non-English language sources
- U.S. Federal and state case law, codes, regulations, legal news, law reviews,
international legal information, Shepards Citations for all U.S. Supreme
Court cases back to 1789
- business news journals, company financial information, SEC filings and reports,
and industry and market news
- medical news, medical journals

Accessing
Searching

After connecting to LexisNexis Academic, you will need to do one of the following
- use the Quick Info search form that automatically appears
on the screen
- select a Search Form to construct your search

Search forms in LexisNexis Academic.
When you open a Search Form in LexisNexis Academic the search screen usually
defaults to the Quick Search mode. A Guided Search is also available which will
allow field searching and offers additional search features.
To create a Guided Search:
- Type your search term(s) in the search box–required
field(s) vary depending on the subcategory you selected. Keyword is the most
commonly required fields.
- Narrow your search with additional terms if necessary.
- Select a source using the pull down arrow to the right
of the Source field–if applicable.
- Specify the date–use the pull down arrow to the
right of the Date field or click the circle to the left of the From field
and enter a date in the From and To fields.
- Click on the Search button.

Modify searches in LexisNexis Academic by using one or more of the following
- enter multiple search terms or concepts
- combine terms using Boolean operators
- limit search terms using field searching
- refine searches with limiters, such as date, document type, etc.

Search Results
-
Search results will vary. If you get:
- No records matched your search, then check your spelling
or the fields you searched in.
- Too many, then go back and limit your search. Sometimes a
search needs to be modified with: additional search words, searching
only a specific field, adding date limitations, or type of materials.
- Too few, then go back and expand your search. Consider synonyms
for your search words or concepts. Try to use professional language
or terminology.
- Irrelevant results, then try new search terms. Consider synonyms
or related concepts. Identify and search using descriptors. Try a different
database.
Results lists
A list of search results matching your search terms will be displayed. This
Document List shows items that matched your search.

Records
As you view your results, use the tabs near the top of the screen
- Expanded Listdisplays a list of matching items containing
your search terms and approximately 5 words on either side of your search
terms
- KWIC™ (Key Words in Context)displays only the portion
of the document(s) containing your search terms and 15 to 25 words on
either side of your search terms
- Fulldisplays the complete text of the documents in your
search results

Use the tabs to select a display mode in LexisNexis Academic.
To navigate through your results
- use the previous and next arrows as necessary

To narrow your search
- use FOCUS™ to find additional terms within the current results–a
temporary search limitation
- Use Edit Search to change your search

Managing Search Results

Databases typically allow you to manage your search results by utilizing the option below:
- printing your search results list and/or specific records
- saving your search results list and/or specific recordssome
databases may allow you to save your file for export into commercial bibliographic
citation manager software, such as EndNote or ProCite
Not all search management features are available in all databases.
Marking
The “mark” feature allows you to select records from within your search results.
By marking items, you can print, save or email multiple records at one time.
To mark a record
- click in the check box to the left of a title in either the
Document List or the Expanded List

When you use the print, save or email commands, you will be able to specify
that your marked documents should be used–full and KWIC formats are not available
for marked documents.
Printing
When viewing an individual document in the Full or KWIC™ format, print it by
doing the following
- click Print/Save Options button–top of the screen–to
display the Print/Save page
- click Display Document button to display your document
without the Academic Universe navigation bar and graphics
- use your Internet browser's print commands to print the
document
- click Return to Full/KWIC to redisplay your Academic Universe

When viewing your results in Document List or Expanded List format, print
it by doing the following
- click Print/Save Options button– top of the screen–to
display Print/Save page
- click the button next to either All Citations or Just
These Citations–enter your document numbers in the text box
- select the Format of Results you want using the drop down
arrow
- click Display Citations to display your document without
the Academic Universe navigation bar and graphics
- use your Internet browser's print commands to print the
document
- click Return to Document List to redisplay your Academic

Emailing
When viewing an individual document in Full or KWIC™ format
- click the E-mail button
- enter an email address in the E-mail this document to this
e-mail address text box
- enter an optional note in the Add this note to the E-mail
text box
- click the E-mail button to send the document
- click Return to Full/KWIC to redisplay your search results
page
When viewing your results in Document List or Expanded List format
- click the E-mail button
- click the button next to either All Citations or Just These
Citationsenter your document numbers in the text box
- enter an email address in the To this E-mail address
text box
- enter an optional note in the Add this note to the E-mail
text box
- click the E-mail button to send the citations
- click Return to Document List to redisplay your search results

Saving
When viewing an individual document in the Full or KWIC™ format, to save it
to your disk
- click Print/Save Optionstop of screen
- click Display Document to display your document without the
Academic navigation bar and graphics
- click File on your browser’s tool bar
- click Save As
- type your file name in the File name dialog box
- in the Save as type dialog box, click on the down arrow
and change to Plain text
- click on the Save button
- click Return to Full/KWIC to redisplay your search results
page
When viewing your results in Document List or Expanded List format, save
it to your disk by doing the following

Search Tips
-
Use advanced search features to modify a search to obtain more successful search
results. You can combine advanced search features to modify and improve your
search. Advanced search features often include:
- date
- document and/or publication type and
- Boolean operators
Phrase or proximity searching
In LexisNexis Academic, there are two ways to search for a phrase
- type the words in the same search box, as you would expect them to occur–quotation
marks are not necessary

- use pre/1 to search for two words as a phrase

Field searching
To limit your search to a specific field in the record
- click on the Guided Search tab
- click on the pull-down arrowat the end of the search
line
- scroll to the field to limit your search to
- click on the fields name

To limit a search to specific years try one of the following
- use the pull-down arrow to the right of the Date field
- click the circle to the left of the From field and
enter a date in the From and To fields

Document type
Specify a type of document–available in some categories–by selecting
appropriate
- search forms that contains the types of materials you need
- document types from the Source list–choices will
vary

Boolean operators
The Boolean operators, AND, OR, and AND NOT, can be used
to modify a search
- in the Basic search, type the Boolean operator as part
of your search terms
- in the Guided Search, click on the Boolean operator
to use:
Use AND to narrow a search. AND looks for both terms in the
same record.
leadership and vision; mainstreaming and science
Use OR to broaden a search. OR looks for either term in the
same record.
mainstreaming or inclusion; elementary education or secondary education
Use NOT to eliminate records with a certain term.

forms, truncate search terms, or replace characters
