Introduction
-
The Global Books In Print database contains records for over
14.8 million English and Spanish-language titles from over 40 countries,
including children's books and audio and video formats. It includes information
on books in print, forthcoming,
or declared out-of-print or out-of-stock indefinitely since 1979. Global
Books In Print records include citations with complete bibliographic
and ordering information, as well
as full-text book reviews. It also includes a publishers index.

Accessing
Searching

Quick Search
Use the Quick Search feature to search Global Books in Print by
- keyword
- author
- title
- ISBN
To create a quick search
- type in your search terms in the entry box
- to change to an author, title or ISBN search, click on the grey
pull down arrowto the left of the entry box
- click the Submit button
Advanced Search
To create a more advanced search, or to search other fields
- click the gold-colored Search buttonnear the top of the screento
switch to the advanced searching mode
- go to the advanced search section of the screen
- locate the Search On: box that lists what you want to search by (author,
ISBN, title, etc)
- if necessary, click the grey pull-down arrow to the right of any of
these items to change what you want to search by
- in the Search For: entry box type your search terms
- click on the Search button to obtain a list of matching records

Search Results
-
Search results will vary. If you get:
- No records matched your search, then check your spelling
or the fields you searched in.
- Too many, then go back and limit your search. Sometimes a
search needs to be modified with: additional search words, searching
only a specific field, adding date limitations, or type of materials.
- Too few, then go back and expand your search. Consider synonyms
for your search words or concepts. Try to use professional language
or terminology.
- Irrelevant results, then try new search terms. Consider synonyms
or related concepts. Identify and search using descriptors. Try a different
database.
Results lists
A list of search results matching your search terms will be displayed. The
Search Results shows
- citations for items that matched your search
- ISBN
- price
- status of itemactive record, on demand, out of print,
etc
Records
To view a Detailed Record
- click on an item's title to see: the full citation, a picture
of the cover (if available), links to subjects, price information,
publisher
information, and more

Managing Search Results

Databases typically allow you to manage your search results by
- marking or tagging records to select only the records that you want
from your search results from later printing, emailing and/or saving
- printing the search results list and/or specific records
- emailing the search results list and/or specific records to your
email address
- saving the search results list and/or specific recordssome
databases may allow you to save your file for export into commercial bibliographic
citation manager software, such as EndNote or ProCite
Not all search management features are available in all databases.
Marking
The "mark" feature allows you to select records from within your
search results.
To mark several record on the same screen
- in the Search Results list, click in the check box
to the left of a title
- click the View Selected link at either the bottom or top of
the list of results
You may then print, email or save each record individually.
Printing
To print a single record try one of the following
- in the Search Results list
- click the title of the item link
- click the Print link at the bottom of the record
- select the format and information to be included
- follow the on-screen instructions
- in a Record
- click the Print link at the bottom of the record
- select the format and information to be included
- follow the on-screen instructions
To print multiple records on the same screen
- in the Search Results list, mark the itemsusing the checkboxesto
be printed
- click the Print link at the bottom of the results
- select the format and information to be included
- follow the on-screen instructions
Emailing
To email a single record try one of the following
- in the Search Results list
- click the title of the item link
- click the Email link at the bottom of the record
- select the format and information to be included
- enter an email address
- follow the on-screen instructions
- in a Record
- click the Email link at the bottom of the record
- select the format and information to be included
- enter an email address
- follow the on-screen instructions
To email multiple records on the same screen
- in the Search Results list, mark the itemsusing the checkboxesto
be emailed
- click the Email link at the bottom of the results
- select the format and information to be included
- enter an email address

Saving
To save a single record try one of the following
- in the Search Results list
- click the title of the item link
- click the Download link at the bottom of the record
- select the file format, record format, and information
to be included
- follow the on-screen instructions
- in a Record

to be included
- follow the on-screen instructions
To save multiple records on the same screen

Search Tips

Use advanced search features to modify a search to obtain more successful search
results. You can combine advanced search features to modify and improve your
search. Advanced search features often include:
- phrase or proximity searching
- field searching
- date
- document and/or publication type
- Boolean operators
- plurals and truncation
One useful tip when searching any electronic database is to leave out articles,
prepositions, and very abstract or general termsthey confuse the database's
search engine.
For example, if the paper is on "The Impact of Mainstreaming Students
in Math Classes,” use the most precise terms like mainstreaming and mathematics
and skip impact, the, of, and in.
Field searching
To limit your search to a specific field
- switch to the advanced search modeclick the gold-colored
Search button near the top of the screen
- locate the Search On: box that lists what you want to search
by (author, ISBN, title, etc)
- if necessary, click the grey pull-down arrow to the right of any
of these items to change what you want to search by
- in the Search For: entry box type your search terms
- click on the Search button to obtain a list of matching records
Date
To limit a search to specific years try one of the following
- change your Search On: field to Publication Year and
type a specific year
- go to the Limit Your Results section of the screen and type
a range of years (like 1990-1999)
Publication type
To specify an item's format
- go to the Format section
- use the check boxes to specify the items' formats
Boolean operators
The Boolean operators, AND, OR, and AND NOT, can be used
to modify a search
- click on the pull-down arrowto the right of the "Search
for:" entry box
- click on the Boolean operator to use
Use AND to narrow a search. AND looks for both terms in the
same record.
leadership and vision; mainstreaming and science
Use OR to broaden a search. OR looks for either term in the
same record.
mainstreaming or inclusion; elementary education or secondary education
Use AND NOT to eliminate records with a certain term.

Use the following symbols in Books in Print to locate plural forms, truncate
search terms, or replace characters

Additional feature in Global Books in Print includes the:
- Forthcoming Book Roombooks, audiocassettes, and videos scheduled
for publication or release in the next 6 months.
- Children's Roombooks, audiocassettes, and videos for children
and young adults. Search by age, grade, subject, setting, and more.
The Favorite Characters area gives links to all titles about popular
children's characters. The Favorite Series area gives links popular
children's series.
- Bowker's Fiction Roompopular fiction books, audiocassettes,
and videos for adults. Identifies popular fiction titles, related works,
and series titles.
