Food, Drink, and Tobacco Policy

This policy applies to all patrons of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center and the West End Ave Deli. This policy is designed to aid in the preservation and care of library materials and electronic equipment, to maintain pest-free buildings and damage-free furnishings, to reduce litter, and to ensure a clean environment for studying and working. To serve all our users we ask for your assistance in helping to foster a comfortable and clean atmosphere. To this end, we require that library users:

• Enjoy food only in the West End Ave Deli. Library patrons may bring personal food items into the West End Ave Deli.
• No food of any kind is allowed in the study rooms, study/reading areas, or other library areas. No food or drinks of any kind may be consumed in the computer labs.
• Consume only non-alcoholic beverages in spill proof and closed lid containers, e.g., sports bottles or other containers which are made of hard plastic, and which have a screw-on or hard plastic cap to prevent spillage. Hot and cold cups from fast-food restaurants or vending machines, juice boxes, and canned soft drinks are NOT allowed.
• There may be food and drinks for meetings, conferences or special events if it is ordered and managed by the university catering service, CHARTWELL. There will be no other food in the meeting or conference rooms. There is no delivery of food into the building for public/university events other than food brought in by the university catering service. All library patrons must adhere to the Alvin Sherman Library Conference Room Policy.
• Smoking and the use of tobacco products are prohibited in the building. Smoke or use tobacco products only in the designated area provided outside to the west and north of the library building.

If you are observed in the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center in any unauthorized area with food, drinks in unauthorized containers, or using tobacco products or smoking, you will be required by a Public Safety officer to either dispose of the item or exit the building.
