"The NSU Glass Garden" by Dale Chihuly

" The NSU Glass Garden"

The glass garden at NSU is part of a series of work Chihuly designed and created for botanical gardens around the world. Stemming from his long love of “glass houses” (conservatories), Chihuly wanted to install his work among and within some of the most important public gardens ever designed.

The project started with Garfield Park in Chicago, was seen at Kew Gardens outside of London and at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. It will next open at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. As the show has evolved, the individual glass elements have changed into forms with strong colors. The pieces relate to the gardens but have their own history.

The beauty of the glass “garden” at NSU is that the glass pieces have become strong interpretations of a botanical form but, no longer necessarily resemble the plants. However, they definitely are created to relate to nature and have their own Chihuly identity.

The Chihuly installation will join other important pieces of art on display in the Alvin Sherman Library, including the monument stone sculpture “Withstanding Presence” by Beverly Pepper, and the mixed media installation entitled “Woman in the Red Dress” by Therman Statom.
