Quilt of Valor
Quilts of Valor
July 2 - August 31, 2007
Library Gallery, second floor
Note: though originally scheduled until August 10, this exhibit has been extended through the end of the month due to its' popularity!

This exhibit will include quilts made by Broward quilters for a nationwide project called "Quilts of Valor." A Quilt of Valor (QOV) is a tribute to the wounded soldier, recognizing his or her service, dedication, and sacrifices made on behalf of our country. It’s a lap-size machine or handmade quilt, which has been pieced and quilted using materials such as cotton and flannels for warmth and comfort. After the exhibit, these quilts will be donated to the Miami VA Hospital to be given to wounded soldiers from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

A free Quilts of Valor workshop will be held in the Library Gallery on Saturday, July 14, from 10 am to 4 pm. Interested quilters can register by contacting Carla Millares, 954-655-2202, Carla@keylimequilts.com

From Sea to Shining Sea
200 Years of America's Coast Survey
June 21 - 30, 2007
Library Gallery, second floor

In 2007, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Coast Survey, America’s oldest scientific agency and the beginnings of NOAA. Originally charged by Thomas Jefferson to provide a “complete and accurate chart of every part of the coasts” of the United States, NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey today holds more than 20,000 historical nautical charts and continually updates its collection of 1,000 current charts.

This 20-poster exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution and NOAA explores the Coast Survey’s history, accomplishments, and scientific contributions. The exhibit depicts the people, tools and technology, and case studies of the Survey, and is richly illustrated with photos, charts, and artwork held in the Survey’s archives.

1857 watercolor from Coast Survey archives In this 1857 watercolor, one of the oldest images of Coast Survey operations, surveyors heave a weighted line to measure the depths of a harbor. Technologies have changed dramatically since then. Today, the Survey continues to collect data on the seas as well as on land to benefit our nation’s commerce, security, and marine environment.

Stuckonyou
"Stuck on You"

If you visited the Alvin Sherman Library on Saturday, January 13, 2007 you might have been surprised to see teenagers "stuck" to the library building with duct tape. "Stuck on You" was the first ever Teen Advisory Board (TAB) fundraiser. Teens affixed themselves to the library building and asked passers-by to contribute money to the cause. TAB members are Public Library Services volunteers whose dedication has earned them a spot on the advisory board. TAB's main goal for 2007, in honor of the Alvin Sherman Library’s fifth anniversary, is to support teen programs at the library. The Teen Room, a hang-out spot for middle and high school students in the library, currently houses two TV's and two Game Cubes. The TAB would like to augment that with more video games so that teens will be drawn to this safe spot.
