The New Synagogue in Czestochowa from a postcard

The New Synagogue in Częstochowa was destroyed by Nazis in 1929.

The Jews of Częstochowa
Coexistence · Holocaust · Memory

December 3, 2006 - January 29, 2007
Library Gallery, 2nd floor

Częstochowa, the most sacred Roman Catholic city in Poland and home of the Black Madonna, has for centuries been a pilgrimage site for millions of Catholics. Before World War II about a third of the population of the city were Jewish (almost 40,000). After the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939, they confined the Jews to a ghetto and later deported them to the concentration camp in Treblinka. Some 6,000 survived in HASAG, a forced labor camp on the outskirts of the Częstochowa. Today, there are fewer than 100 Jews in the city.

“The Jews of Częstochowa” traces the history and growth of the local Jewish community and recounts the vitality and contributions of this once-vibrant population that was virtually obliterated. The exhibit displays original photographs, documents, books and other remembrances of pre-war life, the large scale tragedy of the ghetto and HASAG, and finally the postwar denouement. More about the exhibit.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Library Gallery on their own during regular Gallery hours. Groups may also request a docent-led tour of the exhibit. Schools and other organizations interested in requesting a tour should complete the online tour request form.

2,000 Generations: A Genographic Reunion

October 24 - November 17, 2006
Library Gallery, Second floor

This photographic exhibit by Barry W. Barker, Ed.D., captures the geography and genetics of Spencer Wells and the National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project and complements the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Distinguished Speakers Series presentation by Wells. Barker, associate professor for the Math, Science, and Technology division, presents 50 portraits from populations around the world that coordinate with maps tracing Wells’ theory of the journey of human identity and genetic dispersion. In addition to the photographs, the exhibit also displays tribal and ethnic masks from the personal collections of Professor Barry Barker, Johanna Tunon, and local collector Donna Horkey.

Spencer Wells, Ph.D., a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, is director of the Genographic Project, which tracks genetic markers in members of modern populations, and has traced human genes back to a small population in Africa that bears the DNA source code for all other groups. He will discuss this landmark study in a public lecture at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 26, in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center.

This program is sponsored by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences as part of their year long theme of Identity. For further information, call (954) 262-8236.

Constitution Day
Monday, September 18, 2006, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Library Atrium, Shepard Broad Law Center, Terry Administration Building

On Monday, September 18, 2006 between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., NSU students have the opportunity to celebrate and observe National Constitution Day memorializing the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Law student volunteers will be promoting an "I Signed the Constitution" program sponsored by the National Constitution Center. The "I Signed the Constitution" program encourages students to deepen their understanding of the Constitution by affording them the opportunity to sign their names alongside the signatures of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Traditionally, this program has produced strong reaction from participants because it allows students to publicly acknowledge their dedication to the ideals of our government.

The Law Center's celebration will continue at 4:00 p.m., with a viewing of Judicial Independence: A Hallmark of Liberty, which was commissioned by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and features Justices O'Connor, Breyer and Kennedy. A reception in the Law Center Faculty Terrace will immediately follow the viewing.

Book Launch
Edwin Black's Internal Combustion
September 12, 2006, 7:00 pm
Library Atrium

Tuesday, September 12 at 7 p.m. you are invited to attend the global launch of Internal Combustion: How Corporations and Governments Addicted the World to Oil and Derailed the Alternatives, a new book by New York Times best-selling author Edwin Black. The event will be held in the Atrium of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center. This venue is especially fitting for the unveiling of the book, as Black made extensive use of NSU's library resources in his research.

Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, this explosive book dares to ask - and answer - the pivotal questions of our times: Did we ever need to be dependant on oil? Was it really inevitable that our cars, trucks, and buses be powered by oil-burning internal combustion engines, rather than cleaner electric motors? How did we really become addicted to oil? Can we break the addiction? How fast?

As Internal Combustion forcefully details, battery-powered electric automobiles were abundant a century ago, and Thomas Edison and Henry Ford had planned to make them universal, replacing noisy, soot-belching, polluting gas powered vehicles. Unfortunately, that now-forgotten effort was undermined in favor of the internal combustion engine and the oil cartel.

NSU President Ray Ferrero, Jr. and Edwin Black will speak at the event. Books will be available for purchase and will be signed by the author. Refreshments will be served, and admission to the event is free.
