Crossword Puzzles
December 21, 2005 - January 31, 2006
Reference area display case, second floor

Clue: 14-letter word for a constructor or enthusiast of crosswords
Answer: cruciverbalist

The crossword puzzle was invented by Arthur Wynne in 1913. Asked by his editor to create a new game for the Sunday edition of the New York World, Wynne modified a game called "Magic Squares" that he remembered from his childhood. It first appeared in the December 21, 1913 edition as one of the "mental exercises" in the New York World's "Fun" section. Today, crossword puzzles can be found in every major alphabet-based language, all over the world, and on the Web. This display features various articles and books on crossword puzzles, as well as a guide to crossword websites.

Buddhist Prayer Wheel in the Alvin Sherman Library
Buddhist Prayer Wheel
Permanent exhibit
Library Atrium, First Floor

Hand-forged by craftsmen in India, the Buddhist Prayer Wheel on display at the Alvin Sherman Library was blessed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet during his historic visit to Nova Southeastern University on September 18, 2004.

Prayer wheels are used to spread spiritual blessings and well-being throughout the universe. Rolls of thin paper imprinted with myriad copies of the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, printed in Tibetan script, are wound around an axle in a protective container. Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying this mantra and spinning the prayer wheel invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.

Measuring approximately four feet and weighing 600 pounds, the prayer wheel was donated by local philanthropist Albert Miniaci.

"Those Frenchmen Got a Hellova Nerve":
European Jazz Discography and the Creation of a New Art Music, 1932-1976
April 28 - June 5, 2005
Reference area exhibit space, 2nd floor

To help celebrate the Smithsonian Institution's Jazz Appreciation Month, the Alvin Sherman Library will host a month-long exhibit of books from the collection of Hollywood resident and NSU alumnus Bruce Epperson.

The exhibit explains how a group of European record collectors re-wrote jazz history by documenting the time, place, date and personnel of every known jazz recording. By ignoring details printed on the records labels and focusing on the master number microscopically engraved into the shellac itself, these usually amateur scholars proved that the origins of jazz were far more rich and diverse than American critics claimed.

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host “Expedition 2005—St. Lucia: Helen of the West Indies,” an exhibit of more than 125 photographs of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, April 14 - July 14 in the Alvin Sherman Library.

A grand opening celebration will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 14 to kick off the celebration of St. Lucian culture, music, and food. The NSU community is invited.
