“A Light of Hope”, World AIDS Day 2004
December 1, 2004
Library atrium and other locations.
Each of us has or knows someone who has been impacted by HIV/AIDS. The NSU community will join others around the globe today in observing World AIDS Day 2004 with a series of special events designed to remember those who have died and those who are living with HIV/AIDS.
The Office of Student Affairs is sponsoring a kick-off ceremony that will be held at 9:00 a.m. in the library atrium. The keynote speaker will be Cody W. Smith, 31 years old, who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS when he was 16. Smith, who has been in a long-term relationship with an HIV-negative man for more than 10 years, has been an NSU employee at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences since 1997. He is working on his B.A. in humanities, with a minor in gender studies, and regularly speaks to NSU classes about HIV/AIDS from a patient’s point of view. Smith is a member of GenderPAC, AmFAR, and the Human Rights Campaign. Since he was 20, he has been an advocate for AIDS research; people with AIDS; and the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities.
During the day, a section of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display in the library, along with displays from student organizations. In an effort to increase awareness and understanding about the disease, movies about HIV/AIDS will be shown from 9:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m., in the Rosenthal Student Center and the Leo Goodwin Sr. Residence Hall. The day will conclude with a candlelight ceremony at 7:00 p.m. with keynote speaker Maria Maniscalco, Pharm.D., from HPD’s College of Pharmacy. The event will take place outside the Leo Goodwin Sr. Residence Hall and will feature an open microphone for people to share stories or to remember and honor friends and loved ones who died from the disease.

Exploration 2004: The Oenology Expedition to Chile
A Photographic Exhibit
April 8 to July 8, 2004
Library Atrium, First floor
In the summer of 2003, a group of intrepid travel photographers documented the Colchagua Valley Wine District in Chile. They were guests of several vineyards and, consequently, spent time documenting the lives of their hosts and wine making culture. The results included tasting some of the best wine in Chile and 88 stunning photographs documenting this unique part of the world.
This is the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences' 5th annual photographic exhibit and the brainchild of Environmental Studies Professor Dr. Barry Barker. For each of the past five years, Dr. Barker has traveled to a different third world or developing country to document its particular environment and ecosystem. Last year, Dr. Barker decided to try something different and ventured to the country of Chile during their winter months. He and a group of extremely talented photographers took thousands of pictures, of which only the finest will be on display as part of the exhibit.
