Obtaining a Social Security Number

When you are employed in the United States, you will be required to obtain a Social Security Number. Please review the following employment options below and their individual requirements for receiving a Social Security Number.

  • On-Campus Position Through JobX

    • For on-campus positions which are applied through the JobX portal, you will need to email studentemployment@nova.edu and state that you are requesting a Social Security Number. They will provide you with the required documents you will need to submit. You can only do this once the following is completed:
      • You apply in JobX
      • Your supervisor hires you in JobX
      • HR will then contact your supervisor for them to confirm your I-9 electronically
      • Student Employment will contact you directly and ask you to submit the following items in person to NSU's OneStopShop:
        • Unexpired passport
        • Printed and signed I-20
        • Print I-94
    • Once you submit the required documents listed above to NSU's OneStopShop, the Student Employment Office will process your documents and then send you an email to pick up your letter to bring to the Social Security Office from the One Stop Shop in the Horvitz Building.
    • Once you pick up this letter from student employment, you will need to bring it to the Office of International Affairs to be signed by a DSO.
    • Once you receive this signature, you will need to make an appointment at a Social Security Office and bring the following documents in person.
  • On-Campus Position NOT Through JobX

    • For on-campus positions which are not applied through the JobX portal (i.e. Research Assistants, Chartwells Employees, Bookstore Employees, etc.), you will need to provide the following to the Office of International Affairs:
      • Evidence of Employment (a job offer letter from your employer). Please use this example, ensure your employer includes all the specified required information, and provide on NSU letter head.
    • Once you submit this, the Office of International Affairs will process your document and notify you when your SSN Request Letter is ready for you to pick up.
    • Once you pick up this document, you will need to make an appointment at a Social Security Office and bring the following documents in person. Please ensure all documents are printed and signed.
      • SSN Request Letter (provided by Office of International Affairs as mentioned above)
      • Job Offer Letter from Employer (as mentioned above)
      • SEVIS Activated I-20 (printed and signed)
      • Valid passport with visa
      • I-94 document
      • SSN Application
  • Off-Campus Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Approved Position (link to CPT page)

    • Submit the following documents to the Office of International Affairs.
      • Your approved CPT Application Packet
      • Job Offer letter from your employer
    • The Office of International Affairs will process the documents and create your new CPT Authorized I-20.
    • Once you pick up your new I-20, you will need to make an appointment at a Social Security Office and bring the following documents in person.
      • Job Offer Letter from Employer (as mentioned above)
      • SEVIS Activated CPT Authorized I-20
      • Valid passport with visa
      • I-94 document
      • SSN Application
