Outreach
NSU carries a strong mandate and mission for giving back to the community. The Mailman Segal Institute is committed to community outreach and to the dissemination of best practices. Through our outreach activities, theoretical concepts are demonstrated and translated into meaningful teaching practices for professionals, providing services to early childhood centers in high-risk communities.
MSC (Fort Lauderdale Area)
Currently, our outreach department is working with more than 50 early childhood centers in high-risk communities in Broward County. MSC Fort Lauderdale’s current outreach initiatives include:
- Moran Community Outreach Initiative
- Prescription for Reading Excellence
- A.D. Henderson Literacy Toolkit
MSC Tampa
Started in 1990 in response to a request from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, MSC Tampa has distinguished itself as a community leader in the area of early childhood quality. MSC Tampa has been awarded four major US Department of Education Literacy Grants and is working with more than 60 centers and 21 Head Start classrooms in Hillsborough County. MSC Tampa’s current outreach initiatives include:
- BELLS, Building Emergent Literacy and Language Skills (US DOE)
- Prescription for Reading Excellence (US DOE)
- Project PITCH (Project to Increase the Training Capacity of Hillsborough County) Yearly since 1990
- Early Learning Coalition Grant, Leading the Change to enhance the leadership skills of child care directors
- Mentoring and Coaching workshops funded by Osceola County Public Schools
- Training and Mentoring to low performing Voluntary Pre-K providers
- Collaboration with School District School Readiness, Early Learning Coalition, and The Children’s Board to develop and implement a comprehensive system to achieve and maintain child care quality
