Frequently Asked Questions | University Volunteer Service Program

You can obtain application forms from the volunteer service site you have chosen or you can access forms online at the University Volunteer Service Program website. You must complete the Volunteer Service Program Application and the appropriate background screening packet and submit them to the Client Services Coordinator in Office of Human Resources. The Office of Human Resources is located on NSU’s East Campus, 2nd floor. Once authorized to perform volunteer service at NSU, additional forms will be provided to you.

Yes, a background/criminal conviction screen is required of all volunteers.  Based upon the nature of your volunteer service activity, you will undergo either a Level 1 or Level 2 background screen.  A Level 1 screening is required for all volunteers participating in activities supervised by an NSU faculty or staff member.  A Level 2 screening is required for volunteers participating in activities not supervised by an NSU faculty or staff member or where no NSU faculty or member is present, e.g. overnight field trips, special event chaperones, coaches and tutors. 

All volunteers must successfully complete the background screening (Level 1 or Level 2) on an annual basis and more frequently if requested by the University in its sole discretion.

Yes, you can volunteer if you are under the age of 16, however, in addition to the University Volunteer Service Application, you must also submit a Parental Consent Form and provide a written agreement between the University and your school noting that the volunteer service is part of an approved school program (e.g. service learning, career exploration, etc.).

A volunteer’s term of service is one (1) year.

Yes, you are able to change volunteer activities provided the new department seeks authorization from the Office of Human Resources for the volunteer’s new placement.

You may renew your volunteer eligibility for successive one year period(s) by resubmitting an updated University Volunteer Service Application, consent (if applicable) and background screening forms accompanied by the department’s updated description of the volunteer assignment for review and approval by the Office of Human Resources.
